Just because you're a specialist in some field doesn't mean you have zero knowledge of how the rest of the body works. And considering she's someone who does surgery on the brain, having a general knowledge of how the rest of the body works is probably important considering it's all controlled by, well you know, the brain.

Well, she was a pediatric eye doctor in Flashpoint so Anyway, I think this is the most frustrating characterization of Caitlin because this is needlessly lazy writing.

It's not really uncommon in fiction, especially in comic books. Many comic books scientists have REALLY broad areas of expertise. You're either biology (which encompass everything from microbiology to ANY medical procedures to exobiology) or you are the physical sciences (pretty much everything that isn't related to biology, from astophysics to robotics).

Cisco has the same problem, as he falls into the later category, which is just as wide (if not wider) than the biology specialty, but for some reason he gets way less criticism about it.

Yes, and more often than not, Vascular surgeons perform amputations. Sometimes orthopedic surgeons, but they usually want to repair the bone.

So that means its better that she alone amputates Iris arm. You do realize surgeons work as part of a team with surgical nurses. Who exactly will be doing the assist. She is inexperience and another surgeon with expereince would not be there to counter that inexperience Iris would likely end up dead so it hardly matters if its her or HR doing it if the patient dies. Amputation is simply not an alternative unless she is in the proper facility with properly traned surgeon. It was not an option
