Re: RIP: 1938-2012 Age: 74

When I was only 6 to 7 years old,I remember seeing Mr. Hemsley on both "All In The Family" and then "The Jefersons".

While I was way too young to understand those shows then,I just knew that George Jefferson (more so on the second show) was a very funny character but also, since it wasa Norman Lear show,a fairly serious one.

Every Sunday night in the late 70s and all the way until it ended in 1985
(with no finale),the last new episode airing July 2nd,1985 called "Red Robins". (Which was Jenny Jefferson's daughter's girl scout type troop).

I always tuned in every week to see what George and Louise & co.
would be up to next. I always laughed so hard at George dancing on the bed in the opening credits.

I think 2 of his best episodes were, when he saved the life of a Klansman with CPR,even though George hated his guts. Also, the flashback to when George & Louise were planning to open the first dry-cleaning store,on the night of Martin Luther King's assasination. Great job on Sherman's part.

After that, was NBC's "Amen",a very funny comedy where he played the somewhat underhanded but well intentioned Deacon Frye for 5 year ('86-'91). His last real attempt at a series was "Goode Bahavior" in 1996,which only lasted a season. His last Tv appearanc was in 2011 on "House Of Payne",playing George Jefferson once again.

Sherman also released an albumn in 1992 and there was actually a single released from it called "Everybody Has An Angel",which wasn;t a hit but I still bought it and have it in day one condition at this time.

A small irony to me is thta last month,I finished watching all 9 seasons of "All In The Family",where he started from. Sad to say that now,the main cast of The Jeffersons" are all gone, with the exception of MArla Gibbs who played Florence Johnston.

RIP Sherman, you were a one of a kind.

Sherman Hemsley, the actor best known for playing George Jefferson on “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons,” has died, his publicist confirmed to ABCNews.com. He was 74.

His cause of death was not immediately known.

Hemsley acted on stage before going to the screen, making his Broadway debut as Gitlow in “Purlie.” He first found sitcom stardom in “All in the Family,” playing Archie Bunker’s African-American neighbor.

In 1975, Hemsley and his “All in the Family” co-star Isabel Sanford were given their own spin-off, “The Jeffersons.” The hit show earned Hemsley Emmy and Golden Globe nominations in 1984 and 1985, respectively.

From 1986 to 1991, Hemsley played Deacon Ernest Frye the TV series, “Amen.”

Hemsley and Sanford reunited multiple times in the ’90s and ’00s to reprise their roles as George and Louise “Weezy” Jefferson, appearing on “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” and in commercials.

Re: RIP: 1938-2012 Age: 74

Very sad news. I liked him as Deacon Frye as well. Mr. Hemsley was a wonderful actor and his contributions are much appreciated. R.I.P. to Mr. Sherman Hemsley, he will be missed.

Re: RIP: 1938-2012 Age: 74

My favorite moment when he was Deacon Frye on "Amen" was this.

When he was helping that big German woman practice for her baptism is a big pool or such,The Reverand & a group of people walk in and see them in a composmising position in the water.

Man : "Deacon Frye!!" "What are you doing in there with that woman?!"

Ernie Frye : "Um....The Backstroke!" (and they proceed to do so).
