Bob Gunton : Bob Gunton in 'Tennessee U.S. A.'

Bob Gunton in 'Tennessee U.S. A.'

Did anyone see Bob in Tennessee U.S.A. ? This would be way back in 1967 or give or take a year. He played Johnny Appleseed at the Cumberland County Playhouse in Crossville, Tn. The play was directed by Paul Crabtree. I also saw Bob on a T.V. game show called 3 on a Match.. Host was Bill Cullen.

That's interesting. Seems he must have done that and then he was off to Vietnam. I thought that his career started after his return from the war.

Interesting.

I saw him in the original production when I was nine, and he was a very handsome leading man with a beautiful voice. He had star quality even then. It was a thrilling production, and I have tried ever since to find the music on various sites, but have been unable to do so...I would love to see it again.

He does have an beautiful voice. He's still quite handsome for a man his age. He has the sexiest smile I have ever seen.

Re: Bob Gunton in 'Tennessee U.S. A.'

I thought so too. It would be interesting to see a picture of him from back then.

Re: Bob Gunton in 'Tennessee U.S. A.'

I saw him as a young boy. I think he did it more than one year. It would've been the early 70's, I think. And the character was called Johnny Timberlake, not Appleseed. I appeared as a cast member in a production of "Tennessee USA" in the early 80's. His signature song went:

Chorus

Plinkity plank, pick on a string
That's the tune to the song I sing
Where'd I come from?
Well don't ask me
I didn't look around
So I didn't see

The play was not just directed by Paul Crabtree, but also written by him.

1965 according to the Crossville Chronicle. He originated Johnny Timberlake. I was in the production of Tennessee USA in 1990 as an ensemble cast member. I was born in 1972 so i never saw Bob Gunton in the original performance. I didn't even know until i read this that Bob Gunton was ever anywhere near Crossville. Would be interesting to see if he comes to the 45th anniversary reunion.

Re: Bob Gunton in 'Tennessee U.S. A.'

I'm dying to know what he looked like when he was in his 20's.

Re: Bob Gunton in 'Tennessee U.S. A.'

My father was Paul Crabtree, who wrote and directed the original production of Tennessee, USA!. The show, which was written to open the Cumberland County Playhouse in 1965, ran for 10 consecutive summers. Bob returned for several summers to reprise the role of Johnny Timberlake. He was attending the Catholic seminary with my brother, who now runs the Playhouse. Our father went to visit my brother and met Bob, during the time that Tennessee U.S.A! was being written. He did go b68 to Vietnam, and, after his return, did several more shows at the Playhouse, even after moving to New York. Bob remains a close friend of the family, especially my brother. He has returned to Crossville a few times, but doesn't make it often.

I have a photo of Bob Gunton from that show;I printed it from the Internet.

He was a good-looking kid. I'm not surprised he was a heartthrob.

Marry me,Bob Gunton!
