Lou Costello : How did the boys get along with Joan Davis???

How did the boys get along with Joan Davis???

I heard that Joan Davis was hard to get along with and difficult to work with. How did Abbott And Costello get along with her.

Re: How did the boys get along with Joan Davis???

According to the audio commentary for 'Hold That Ghost', Davis herself was very co-operative, but the problem stemed from the fact that Lou felt she was trying to steal the picture. During dalies from the dance scene with Costello and Davis, the editors were all laughing hysterically and Lou fumed, "Who's the star of this picture, anyway?"

This was not atypical of Lou, who did not work well with people as funny as he was (this even included Abbott, at times). In fact, Lou insisted that the majority of Shemp Howard's scenes be cut from their first films because Lou felt Shemp was stealing his laughs.

Thanks for the information. Lou was a great talent, but did have a tremendous ego. I take it that Abbott was usually well liked, even if Costello sometimes was not?

Lou also was displeased with just how funny William Bendix was in the A&C film "Who Done It?"
