Gladys Cooper : Pin-Up Girl?

I was surprised by a statement in the commentary on the new DVD edition of THAT HAMILTON WOMAN that Ms. Cooper was a pin-up model during WWII. I mainly know her as the flinty, middle-aged Lady Nelson in that movie, and it's hard to imagine her as a pin-up. I asume the photos were pretty tame, given the era, but if anyone knew where any could be viewed online, I'd be curious enough to take a look.

Perhaps it was during World War I since she would have been thirty when that war ended.

I typed 'Gladys Cooper pin up' into Google and several lovely images of her younger self came up. She was very lovely

I did the same thing. She was gorgeous! And what a luxurious head of hair she had.

But she never smiled! Was that in the days of the 30 second exposure?

It was during the first world war, not the second.

Cooper was a photographer's model starting when she was a child. As a young woman, she was considered one of the quintessential beauties of her time, and picture postcards of her were sold.

And she was gorgeous. Put her name into a search engine, and you'll find some glorious pictures.

She really had an amazing life, happily going from cute child to beautiful model to serious actress, with, it seems, no silly vanity about playing mature roles when the time came.

She strikes me as someone who really took a bite out of life, and enjoyed her work.

I think you might have misheard. She was 52 in 1940. Not a lot of guys want their mom as a pinup. lol World War I, maybe, but even then she was a bit past her prime for a pinup. She was a model at one time, though.

I believe she was not only a pin-up during WWI, but the #1 pin-up of that time in the UK. Of course, we're just talking head shots, but there's no doubt about how beautiful she was. Someone mentioned her hair before - when you see someone talking about running barefoot through a woman's tresses in an old movie, this is what they are talking about.
