Gladys Cooper : Great Actress
Re: The Mother
I know you posted this a while ago, but I just saw her 'Night Call' episode of "The Twilight Zone," and she was brilliant as usual. Of course I remember her from "Rebecca" as well. I did not know until today she died the year I was born. Sometimes I envy the older generations for having been able to view these stars in their prime. (I got to thinking about it after the death of Penny Singleton.)
Alfred Hitchcock
I saw her on NICK AT NITE in an old Alfred Hitchcock where was very good. I wished I had taped it.
Re: Alfred Hitchcock
Yes, in addition to her great film work, I've never forgotten her in the TZ episodes "Night Call" and "Nothing in the Dark" or the AHP episode "The End of Indian Summer". She was always splendid. She was also beautiful in her youth (was originally a model); and even in old age one can still see that beauty shining throughalong with a perpetual inner radiance.

Gladys Cooper and 'The Twilight Zone'
Dear xavrush89,
I just saw Gladys Cooper in "The Twilight Zone" episode, "Nothing in the Dark." It should have been one of the top-rank episodes. She plays an old woman who never leaves her shabby little room in an abandoned building because she fears Death who she knows is a real person, trying to trick her into getting inside. Robert Redford is a policeman who gets shot outside her door and begs to be let in.
Her performance is so lovely and poignant, especially when she talks about how much she used to love the sun when she was young. But Redford is godawful. He's very amateurish in this early part of his career and has no idea how to play his part.
It's been awhile since I've seen "Night Call," but that is a far better episode.
Regards,
Justin

Gladys + Cathleen Nesbitt
Gladys was good friend with fellow English actress Cathleen Nesbitt. Both were born in 1888 a few weeks apart. Cathleen starred as Mrs. Higgins in the Broadway
musical, My Fair Lady. Gladys received the role in the movie. However Cathleen was busy appearing in the TV hit The Farmer's Daughter. Both appeared in the movie Separate Tables. Cathleen acted almost until her death at 95.

Re: Gladys + Cathleen Nesbitt
Movie girl: I am also a fan of Cathleen Nesbitt! I love British films and enjoyed her performance in Jassy with Margaret Lockwood and So Long at the Fair with Jean Simmons and Dirk Bogard. Two great ladies. I just saw Separate Tables and enjoyed it too!
AT the age of ten I watched The Farmer's Daughter on TV with William Windom and Inger Stevens. Cathleen plays Congressman Morley's mother.
One episode stands out when one of the children asks for something. Cathleen turns to Inger's character (Katie Hallstrom) and says "Doesn't that give someone an idea?"
in a meaningful tone. Even at a young age I knew she meant her son should propose to Katie! Here we see Katie excelling at her job as the maid, but more importantly as a person who is conversant with many aspects of politics!
Of course Loretta Young excels too as Katie in the film and Joseph Cotten as Congressman Morley. Besides being beautiful, she is impressive with her knowledge of politics!

Re: Great Actress
LOVED her in 'Seperate Tables'. A great dramatic actress (with comedic talents). The stage still misses her.
Re: Great Actress
I can remember being VERY young and watching her in "Now, Voyager", and was actually FRIGHTENED by her; she played the domineering mother so well.
Now that I'm older (40, to be exact), I have the film on DVD, and when I watch it she STILL frightens me.absolutely stunning performance. It's on Turner Classic Movies tonight at 8, actually..
No, no"cruelty." I always think that has a nobler ring to it.

Re: Great Actress
She is so great in Now Voyager! Bette always said great things about her.
Re: Great Actress
Miss Cooper has always been one of my favorite actresses. I can endure Redford's non-acting in the TZ 'Nothing In The Dark' episode purely because of Miss Cooper's luminous presence and top-notch acting. I also greatly admire her work as the bitter, envious nun in The Song of Bernadette. She seemed to have the ability to play monstrous characters(like the mother in Now, Voyager)and decent ones(like the woman in 'Nothing In The Dark')with equal facility and be equally convincing as both. I certainly boo and hiss her wicked character in Now, Voyager, and her conflicted Sister Vauzous in Song of Bernadette has me booing and weeping alternately. What a great talent she was.
Re: Great Actress
She was in one of the creepiest episodes of Twilight Zone.Night Calls.

Re: Great Actress
One of the lists that comes up from time to time is 'worst/favourite villains,' but generally they're all male characters.
I think Gladys Cooper would deserve a spot for either the Bernadette or the Now Voyager role. Not just spectacularly horrible but entirely believable.

Re: Great Actress
Movie girl: Many wonderful films have been Graced with Gladys Cooper's presence. When I was little I saw many on TV and continue to watch them now. She could be a kind person or cold and domineering. In Song of Bernadette we see that Jennifer Jones does a brilliant portrayal of the title character and Gladys was really fantastic as the cold and seemingly heartless nun. Also, Vincent Price and Charles Bickford were great and authentic in their roles as well! A marvelous film really enhanced by Gladys Cooper.
One part of the film really stands out toward the end. I have not seen it for years, but Gladys semi- apologizes to Bernadette for suspecting her of making up the story of the miracle she had seen. Bernadette looks straight at her and says,
"I never really wanted you to believe me anyway, sister!" What a loaded statement!
Did it imply that she was not worthy of believing the truth? At the end we see her very penitent when Bernadette is dying. I just read that she was 37.
It was great to see Gladys on One Step Beyond and Twilight Zone, 2 of my favorite shows when I was very young.
Thank you for discussion. Will get back with you. Gladys wa111cs great!
