Ronald Colman : Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

I must have been about 10 years old and I can remember seeing Ronald in a movie called A Double Life. I thought he was so very handsome and he had a marvelous voice. Just this morning I saw him in The Late George Apley and loved the movie. I think he was so very smart and sophisticated looking. No one like him anymore. I remember The Hall of Ivy also. Great TV.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

He was never more beautiful than in "Tale of Two Cities." And that voice! It really serves well that wonderful line about a far, far better ...

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

I agree completely. He's so much more attractive without that little mustache, and he played Sydney Carton to perfection. I couldn't understand why Lucie (in the film) didn't just melt into a puddle at his feet, especially when he spoke to her.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

Although Ronald Colman's mustache was his trademark, I have to agree he was better looking without it -- styles change. I believe Tale of Two Cities and Clive of India are the only films in which he appeared without the mustache. I am a huge fan of his -- I guess my favorite of his films is Random Harvest, but I like so many of them -- Tale of Two Cities, The Light That Failed, Arrowsmith. I wish TCM would honor him with a month long tribute -- I would even settle for a day.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

True. TCM lost the rights to thousands of films when Turner sold out to Warner Bros. They are working every day to get more films.

They show Tale of 2 Cities, Raffles very rarely, also very rarely Talk of the Town and Champagne for Caesar, Random Harvest sometimes pops up during Oscar season. Once I saw Cynara. And my all time favorite Kismet has been shown twice -- I was amazed that this was shown at all!, fortunately I was right there with my little DVR. And one night on silent movie night they had The White Sister.

If you want to see more Ron on TCM as much as I do, go sign in and put him on the suggestion board. I absolutely agree about his birthday celebration. There is something going on here as you say, I'm just not sure what.

Let's just say that God doesn't believe in me.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

I agree that "Tale of Two Cities was one of his best. When I was a little girl. my Dad was a huge movie fan and it was through him that I became acquanted with all the old movies and the great movie stars of that long ago era. Ronald Colman was one of his favorites and he became one of mine as well. My Dad passed away last year, but he left me his legacy of loving movies and I will always be grateful. By the way has anyone seen "Cynara"? I think it is one of his most beautiful portrayals and that voice! One of the most beautiful in film history.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

I have been faithful to thee, Cynara! in my fashion. (Ernest Dowson)

Lol. Fab film and Ronald Colman was gorgeous in it - as to his voice, I would go further - I think it was incomparable, the most beautiful in cinematic history.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

He is incredibly handsome, very talented and has such an amazing voice! *Swoons*
A Tale of Two Cities is among one of my all time favorite Colman films -- followed closely behind Random Harvest.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

I saw Colman's ToTC when I was substitute teaching. It was block scheduling, so I spent the entire day with Mr. Colman's Sydney Carton. I was a classic movie fan, but I'd never heard of Colman. I've been a fan every since. Colman was the first actor to make me appreciate a lovely speaking voice.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

Talk Of The Town (also starring Cary Grant and Jean Arthur) was shown on Film4 recently and will be shown again on the 27th of June 2008 at 13:00

Ronald Colman has a beard for most of the film, but as part of the storyline he shaves it off, keeping a moustache.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

That voice! Be still my heart!

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

I'm so glad I'm not the only one! When I was younger, I would totally swoon over his 'A Tale of Two Cities.'

Supergirl was my first crush. I cried when my mom told me she wasn't real.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

I agree wholeheartedly.

I've said this several times over the years and throughout the IMDb boards, but I think it bears repeating here:

Many who have, during the last 10-20 years or so, "discovered" Ronald Colman and his great pictures (such as "A Tale of Two Cities," "The Prisoner of Zenda," "A Double Life," etc.), and who marvel at his speaking voice, are unaware that he was also a major star during the silent era. It's been said of Colman that, upon learning talking pictures would soon displace silent movies, he thought his 111c career would come to a screeching halt. Almost incredible, really, that he would imagine such a thing; but talented people aren't always the best judges of their own abilities and this had been true of Colman. But he not only survived the transition to sound, he thrived! And Ronald Colman spent the next 28 years gracing the silver screen with the finest acting voice it would ever know, bar none!

To say nothing of the fact that Colman was the kind of "handsome & dashing leading man" whom the ladies swooned after and whom the gents liked, admired, and wished they could be. Or the fact that, throughout Ronald Colman's whole celluloid career, he possessed a unique screen presence and a canny, keen wit as he voiced his lines. Almost peerless in his profession, and a truly top-notch actor who, well-honed by some twelve years prior experience from the silent days, had a mastery of facial expressions that could bring alike laughter or melted hearts and tears from the viewers.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

YouTube has several of Ronald Colman's movies in full and some fan devotional videos. The link below will take you to one such devotional showing a montage of stills from his silent era pictures, but there you will also find on-site clickons (but using their search engine won't hurt, either!) that will take you right to Colman's movies, both silent and sound, including his first talkie, "Bulldog Drummond" (most of whose dated humor is delivered by Colman's silly Englishman sidekick) and some excerpts from the silent "The Winning of Barbara Worth" (1925, which co-starred a VERY young Gary Cooper in his first important picture and role of prominence.)

When I watched what little there was to see on YouTube of "The Winning of Barbara Worth," I could almost hear Colman's familiar velvet voice delivering the lines on the title cards! Amazing screen presence 16d0 , both visually and audibly, in both silent and sound pictures! It's almost tragic that most of modern generations of filmgoers have never even heard of Ronald Colman, truly one of the greatest actors of all time.

Re: Ronald Colman was my first crush !!!

Colman was handsome, dashing and a great actor. He set the mold for Leslie Howard, David Niven, and Rex Harrison.
