Film General : Criterion Collection announces their May releases
Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
Interesting selections. Glad they seem to be working their way through Welles' Shakespeare films, and another Edward Yang film added to their lineup is always a plus.

I heard about Ghost World about last week. It's nice to see another Welles film on North American Blu-ray. And that world cinema collection looks impressive.
Nice upgrades as well.
What are you gonna do with those pies, boys?

Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
Yeah, Criterion actually hinted at Ghost World (among several other films) in that New Year's drawing they always do. And I think you might be referring to a recent tweet from Thora Birch who confirmed the Ghost World release. Just good to have it on Blu-ray, it's a favorite comedy of mine and I've had the same DVD for ages.

Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
Ghost World is great news! I don't really care about any of the others though.
Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
While I like the whole Scorsese World Cinema project a lot, and I'm glad to see these films see the light of day, putting 6 films that have nothing to do with one another on one expensive BD package is frustrating to me, but I guess that's in a way the point - you want 2 or 3 of the films, but you have to get the package, and maybe you discover new favorites. Anyway I would get Taipei Story and Insiang right away, so I'll probably spring for it. Interested in the rest in one way or another anyway.
Ghost World, Othello and Jeanne Dielman are all pretty much essential for me as well. I like the Ozu but it's not one of my favorites from him; haven't seen Dheepan and don't know a huge amount about it.
Nice to see a pretty large chunk of Welles' work finally available in HD.

Yep, I assume that is what is being aimed at with these collections. I'm only familiar with Yang and Weerasethakul among these, myself. Insiang sounds like a good one, just reading about it briefly.
Dheepan didn't seem to get as much buzz stateside as I would have expected after its Palme d'Or win. His prior film Rust and Bone seemed to get some traction over here, but maybe that was largely in part to having a star in Marion Cotillard whereas Dheepan seems to be a cast of unknowns. I'd see it but it doesn't strike me as a priority, personally.

Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
I haven't seen Insiang, but I've seen one other Lino Brocka film from roughly the same period and it was amazing, and I'm interested in seeing more from him (and Filipino cinema in general). Haven't seen that Weerasethakul film but I've seen a couple from him and they were pretty interesting; I still don't feel I have a real grasp on him but that's part of what makes him cool to me.
Dheepan is something my local library will almost certainly get so I'll just check it out from them.

Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
Dheepan was absolutely fantastic but I don't see myself buying it because it's streaming on Netflix.

Listomania. Oh dear I suppose if you can't discuss films intelligently this will have to do.

You do realise the real benman is a Chelsea fan and by trying to get everyone to hate him you are playing into his hands. Chelsea fans love to be hated, they actually sing on the terraces 'Nobody likes us, we don't care'.

Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
That's quite a selection for one month! Great to see the Brocka and the Shinarbaev get the treatment.
That's all, folks!

Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
Pretty good lineup. Ghost World and Jeanne Dielman are both favorites of mine. I like Good Morning but not quite enough to justify buying it. It's great that another Edward Yang film is getting a release; I haven't heard of some of those other Scorsese Collection films so I'll have to look into them.
Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
Yo.
Taipei Story (1985, Edward Yang)
roll up the purp / with a smug f-ck you smirk
Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
Damn you, IMDb. I see so much excitement over Criterion's release of Ghost World, one of my favorite comedies, and I won't have much time to talk about it with fellow fans.
Re: Criterion Collection announces their May releases
I figured you'd be excited! It's a definite buy for me as well. Thora Birch as Enid is one of my favorite performances/roles of the 21st century.

and still no Police Academy movies
If there's a new way
I'll be the first in line
but it better work this time
