Film General : For those that are sceptical of the new FG subreddit…

mostly because they don't like the layout and design of the site, I, too, felt the same way after initially joining, but you really get used to it after a few days, and it's actually pretty cool, in my opinion.

I like how you get instant notifications when someone replies to you so you never miss a reply (instead of always checking emails), and it's cool to have a rep-like system on there where you can upvote the posts you agree with or appreciate. Also, it's so easy and accessible to post from iOS or Android with the app.

I'd encourage anyone who hasn't subscribed yet to do so, and if you have subscribed but haven't really posted, please do. We've got so many of the great FGers on there and I'm hoping people can become accustomed to the site before these boards close down for good.

Just my two cents! I see this subreddit as the best opportunity for most of FG's regulars to come together in the one community and speak about film, as opposed to being sprawled out across numerous different migrant boards and losing a lot in between. Cheers.

I've already managed to get away with provoking and screwing with users, and there's nothing they can do about it because I haven't technically violated any rules. It's actually alright.

The fact that the subreddit has 202 subscribers currently is a bit surprising to me. I never felt that there was over 50 people regularly posting on FG (and I'm pretty sure there aren't), so it seems that there are a lot more people visiting these boards who just read without ever posting anything. I'm not saying it's a bad thing or anything, I just think it's interesting.

There are plenty of people who like to read the discussions going on. When I initially used IMDb but didn't have an account, I did use to read the message boards of beneath the reviews of specific movies.

It was only later after I made the account I discovered FG by looking at a particular users posting history. For a few months I never really made a post here and only used to read discussions, I don't remember what made me to start posting regularly here.

Well, before I started posting on FG, I was lurking around and reading threads for more than a year.

+ there are a lot of people posting here on FG but some of us are just not frequently posting hence it seems we are a small community but there are definitely more than 50 people posting here (even if it's only once a week).

We may argue about how many people post on a weekly basis. Even if it is more than 50, it definitely isn't anywhere close to 200.

I'm sure it's a fine alternative, but Reddit is blocked in my country. I decided not to set up a proxy server to join subreddit, or any other forum for that matter. It's time.

I do wish people would shut up about the boards closing. It's getting ridiculous. What about the millions and millions of people who use the site everyday and not the message boards, do they care. Speaking to friends about the situation, the general consensus is, so what. All except one didn't know they were closing, well 2 including me. They use the site but not the message boards, some don't use the site at all.There were a number of threads on this board in the past of people complaining about the trolls, too many OT threads and the desperate state the board was in, who now seem to forget that and are up in arms about it closing. The boards used to be good at one time but that was a long time ago. I certainly won't miss them, though i realise that for people who have been on here a long time it will be upsetting. Me, myself and I shall continue conversing with like minded people who are real and not anonymous.

Getting rid of the boards won't affect Imdb at all, it just means that some people will have to find something useful to do with their lives. Shock horror, perhaps they'll have to communicate with real people.

Same here. None of my friends (that I know of) watch obscure, older and/or European films. Or at least not so much as I do.

Yeah, it does take a little while to get used to. No more "bumping" threads to the top and whatnot. But in terms of the layout of actual conversations within a thread, I think it's actually much closer to the feel of IMDb than some of these other boxy-looking alternatives. It's pretty easy to see the flow of a conversation on Reddit, and it's also nice being able to sort between the "hot" threads and the "new" threads, so you can keep an eye on what is most active as well as what is fresh content very easily.

And of course the biggest improvement is it's moderated and troll free.

I'm totally cool with everyone's own opinion, but that it a HUGE detractor for me.

I got annoyed when people here would cleverly work their way around it. Cursing to me (and yeah, just to me probably) comes off so immature and childish when used on these boards. The poster loses credibility to me. But again, I'm an old fart so I get it.
