Film General : The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

Two movies I enjoy dearly. Upon rewatching the latter, I couldn't help but notice similarities between the two films - in style and tone. The opening scenes of both are eerily atmospheric and haunting, and both films end on a rather humorous note.

Both Daniel Day-Lewis and Jack Nicholson were memorable in their respective roles while being over-the-top at times. Both were troubled fathers who seemed to love their son but over time, got worse (in different ways, of course).

If you had to pick

Which movie/performance do you prefer?

It's an interesting comparison

TWBB easily

Re: The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

Easily There Will Be Blood on both counts.

Re: The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

Shining is the bomb.

Edit: But DDL destroys Nicholson.

9/10 or 4/10 isn't a tough choice.

The Shining.

The scene in the TWBB of the hooker cackling madly in the brothel was reminiscent of the of old woman in the bathtub in The Shining.

There Will Be Blood (2007)
Daniel Day-Lewis

I don't care who dies in a movie, as long as the dog lives.

Re: The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

Both in my top 10 very difficult to choose. I guess I'll go with The Shining because there are so few great ghost movies.

Re: The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

Tough call. I think PTA is one of the best directors working today. Kubrick is always a hit/miss for me but The Shining is one of the best horror films ever made. So creepy and atmospheric. There Will Be Blood falls a bit short in comparison, as a whole, but still shines, in the end. I do think Daniel portrayed a more well-rounded and even deeper character than Jack portrayed. Tough choice but if I had to choose -

Movie: The Shining
Performance: Day-Lewis

There Will Be Blood.

Weird comparison. I definitely prefer both TWBB and DDL's performance.

Re: The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

The Shining would be my pick. Just feels like a more iconic movie to me. That and I love the isolated wintry setting. Nicholson was fabulous as well. It's surprisingly unlike the book though.

Re: The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

9/10 to The Shining (might have been a 10 if it hadn't been kinda ruined for me by The Shinning), 7/10 to There Will Be Blood.

Re: The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

The Shining, because TWBB freaked me out horribly toward the ending.

Re: The Shining (1980) or There Will Be Blood (2007)?

Interesting comparison of film and I think you're right, there are similarities in tone and events. So If I had to pick. I think TWBB is a better all-around film. I loved The Shining, but I never found is scary, and as a horror film - that's a BIG failing.

Also he music in There Will Be Blood is reminiscent of some of the music in The Shining. They have a similar feel and tone too. Very tense and unsettling but occasionally darkly humorous in parts too. It's very close but I'll go with There Will Be Blood. 2 of my all time favorite films, for sure. The last time I watched The Shining I had a thought. Even though it's perfect and untouchable, I think Paul Thomas Anderson could make a great remake of The Shining. With Joaquin Phoenix as Jack, Amy Adams as Wendy, and Jacob Tremblay as Danny.
