Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Allow me to precede my list with a quick farewell to this website. I browsed it frequently in the early 2000's, creating my first account in May 2004 and talking movies with like-minded (and not like-minded) cinephiles for the next decade. "Met" a lot of great people here, collaborated with several on YouTube, and can claim two moderately epic troll projects. The first was when I claimed to be a real life hitman on the Collateral board around 2005, convincingly discussing the logistics of the job with every skeptic until the thread had gone for hundreds of posts and was finally shut down. The second originated here on Film General; some may remember the Almost Human movement wherein we began submitting reviews and ratings for an obscure 1927 film in large enough numbers to make it reach a 1920's Top 10 list on IMDb. Eventually the admins caught on, and with a new 60-minute posting quota I moved over to this account.

Thanks for indulging me! Had some good times. On to the Top 10 of 2016.

1.) La La Land
2.) Nocturnal Animals
3.) Triple 9
4.) Eye in the Sky
5.) Midnight Special
6.) Sully
7.) Green Room

Fittingly my final bump.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Welcome home, Mr. Bailey

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

We sure did.

Popstar was surprisingly solid. There were a few immature moments, but overall it was a great comedy if you're okay with Andy Samberg.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Triple 9 was a cop action/thriller, something along the lines of Training Day and Heat, and just a notch below them in quality but with a kickass cast (Chiwetel Ejiofor, Casey Affleck, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Mackie, Aaron Paul, Kate Winslet, Gal Gadot, Norman Reedus, and Clifton Collins Jr.). 13 Hours was Michael Bay's serious depiction of the Benghazi assault/defense/evacuation. I actively detest the Transformers movies, but when he puts his mind to it, Bay can make something worthwhile.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

La La Land 10/10
The Witch 9/10
Arrival 9/10
Green Room 8/10
Deadpool 7/10

I'm willing to watch Nocturnal Animals, Silence, The Nice Guys, and Hell or High Water.

My own top 10:

1. La La Land: Well, the praise speaks for itself.

2. I Am the Pretty Thing that Lives in the House: Underappreciated arthouse horror gem by Oz Perkins.

3. The Arrival: This film has the kind of concept that could go wrong in so many ways, that the fact that it actually worked even gives it some extra points.

4. Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World: Very atmospheric documentary on the Internet, a joy to watch.

5. The Witch: This is really the kind of stuff that feels like it was made for me.

6. Sing Street: I'm really into coming-of-age stories and these one is top-notch. I'm also intrigued by 80s pop culture with its highs and lows (more highs, I'd say), which was portrayed beautifully here.

7. The Blackcoat's Daughter: Another one from Oz Perkins. Superbly crafted moody atmosphere, great soundtrack, and some nice performances. Brilliant ending, too.

8. I Am Not a Serial Killer: Nice indie supernatural thriller

9. The Conjuring 2: Better than the first. Good popcorn fun.

10. Green Room: Simple but effective horror/thriller. Great performances from Anton Yelchin (R.I.P.), Patrick Stewart, and specially Imogen Poots.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I was pleasantly surprised by I am not a Serial Killer. Great atmosphere in that film.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I hope they adapt the other books of the series.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Nice, I didn't even know it was a part of a series.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I'll look for Lo and Behold, Reveries of the Connected World then, really enjoy atmospheric films. The Conjuring 2 wasn't bad either, I considered tossing it under Honorable Mentions for a few minutes.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

There's alot I haven't seen (although alot I have seen as well) but from what I've seen:

1. The Bronze (2015)
2. Don't Breathe (2016)
3. The Boy (2016)
4. King Jack (2015)

You know what this is taking to long, the first 10 listed here: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls066658171/

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Good to see you here again delta - I know you've kept posting but it's been a rare occurrence. Our tastes aren't that similar for the most part so it's surprising (and pleasing) to see us share a top favorite here. Of the ones that don't make my list, I liked Midnight Special and Sully a fair amount, Green Room and Deadpool a bit less though I still enjoyed them. Of your honorable mentions two are on my (extended) list; I also liked The Nice Guys and Hell or High Water. Haven't seen any of the rest.

Here's my list from the CFB poll that ended early this month; films that are technically 2015 are marked*, but I saw all of these between February 2016 and January 2017 -

1. La La Land (Damien Chazelle)
*2. Unimachi Diary / Our Little Sister (Hirokazu Koreeda)
3. Paterson (Jim Jarmusch)
4. Silence (Martin Scorsese)
*5. Sunset Song (Terence Davies)[/blue]
6. Moonlight (Barry Jenkins)
*7. The Thoughts That Once We Had (Thom Andersen)
*8. Taxi (Jafar Panahi)
*9. Saul fia / Son of Saul (László Nemes)
*10. The Lobster (Yorgos Lanthimos)
11. Manchester by the Sea (Kenneth Lonergan)
12. Love & Friendship (Whit Stillman)
*13. Maggie's Plan (Rebecca Miller)
14. Zootopia (Howard/Moore/Bush)
*15. Aferim! (Radu Jude)
16. Elle (Paul Verhoeven)
17. Certain Women (Kelly Reichardt)
*18. The VVitch (Robert Eggers)
*19. A Tale of Love and Darkness (Natalie Portman)
20. Arrival (Denis Villeneuve)
21. Nocturnal Animals (Tom Ford)
22. Ah-ga-ssi / The Handmaiden (Chan-wook Park)

Here's to the fools who dream

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Been meaning to watch The Lobster, and were you surprised at how depressing Silence was? I don't mean that as a criticism, and knowing the story better I guess it had to be, but I made the mistake of insisting we finish my recent bachelor party with "the new Scorsese movie." Well made film, but man, what a buzz kill.

I really appreciated your beer advice upon turning 21. That being said, I admit I've moved on to whiskey as the drink of choice since then. It was a combination of imitating hard-boiled 40's private eyes who'd throw back a glass of rye in a dark smoky room and wanting to feel less bloated. But that's no knock on ale!

Cheers, my friend.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I really appreciated your beer advice upon turning 21.

What beer advice? Sounds interesting.

So far my three favorite films of this year is, aprox. in order:

Moonlight
Paterson
Manchester by the Sea
(La La Land haven't been released yet in my country)

My All-Time Favorite Movies:http://www.imdb.com/list/ls031367581/

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Moonlight
Arrival
Nocturnal Animals
The Nice Guys
Split
Hell or High Water
Manchester by the Sea
The Neon Demon
La La Land
10 Cloverfield Lane

HM: Deadpool, Deepwater Horizon, Silence, Sing Street, Eddie the Eagle

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Every ad I saw for Moonlight just screamed Oscar bait, but was it more than that? Split seemed like exploitation fun, while The Neon Demon seems like it would be a cool atmospheric movie. While I really liked The Nice Guys, and objectively it was incredibly well written, somehow it didn't quite have the Shane Black greatness of Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Good ol' Delta, the only FGer I ever became Facebook friends with. I look forward to seeing you on the new Reddit forum.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I've got it bookmarked. See you there.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I'll do it by IMDb dates. Keep in mind there are still a lot I wanna see.

La La Land
Toni Erdmann
American Honey
Manchester by the Sea
Sing Street
Hunt for the Wilderpeople
Le Fils De Joseph (Son of Joseph)
Little Men
I, Daniel Blake
Edge of Seventeen

Only other's from your list that I have seen - Midnight Special and green Room (both 8/10).

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Is Manchester by the Sea a bummer movie? That won't stop me from seeing it, I'm just curious. A friend said it was the most depressing movie he'd seen since The Road.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

There's actually a surprising amount of wit and humor in the way the film is written. I mean, it's not a laugh riot or anything, but the way it deals with the subject matter isn't completely one-sided and there's plenty of humorous individual moments.

Welcome home, Mr. Bailey

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

My ratings of your top 10:

La La Land - 8.5
Midnight Special - 7
Sully - 7.5
Green Room - 8
Arrival - 9
Deadpool - 5

My top 10 (since you included some 2015 titles that got wide releases in 2016, I'll do the same):

1. Manchester by the Sea
2. The Witch
3. O.J.: Made in America (documentary)
4. Arrival
5. La La Land
6. Moonlight
7. Hell or High Water
8. Everybody Wants Some!!
9. Green Room
10. 10 Cloverfield Lane

I have a lot of the foreign (furrin!) stuff to see (The Handmaiden tops my most anticipated list of unseen 2016 titles, for instance). And films like Certain Women and Voyage of Time, among many others.

The eagle never lost so much time as when he submitted to learn from the crow.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Wups, I honestly didn't realize I had some 2015 movies on my list, but sure enough. Aw well. My friend swears by Everybody Wants Some, but I've just always had a hard time getting into Linklater movies. When there's a bunch of jocks just being jocks in college, where's the conflict in the story?

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

When there's a bunch of jocks just being jocks in college, where's the conflict in the story?

Right, there isn't any, really, but that's the case for several Linklater films so it's understandable if he's just not your style. Do you feel similarly about Dazed and Confused (the spiritual forebear of Everybody Wants Some!!) as well, then?

The eagle never lost so much time as when he submitted to learn from the crow.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Essentially. It had a lot to like about it, like the killer intro with Sweet Emotion, and the origins of Matthew McConaughey's immortal tagline, but at the end I sort of shrugged and went on about my day.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Mine:

1. Arrival
2. Silence
3. Hell or High Water
4. La La Land
5. The Edge of Seventeen
6. Moonlight
7. The Handmaiden
8. The Nice Guys
9. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
10. Elle

H.M: Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Nocturnal Animals, Hacksaw Ridge, Swiss Army Man, Sully.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Edge of Seventeen was supposed to be good, but it just kind of came and went. I'd watch just for Woody Harrelson.

Unfortunately, Rogue One didn't do much for me. I had a few issues, but I'll just leave it at this: what's the point of guerrilla ground assaults with small arms fire when there are essentially planet-killer weapons? The former seems anachronistic.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Hiya, delta!

That's all, folks!

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

It's a damn shame.

Speaking of shame, I'm ashamed to say I haven't even heard of the titles on your list. I need to step up my game!

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

If I recall, you're the one that was studying to be a pilot, and you lived in my state. I like the little short movies you use to make and post.

I don't think I've seen enough to make a proper list, but my tops so far include:

Midnight Special
La La Land
The Nice Guys
The Meddler
The Witch

Take care young man, and happy flying.

This has been the last public service announcement.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Yep, and you were telling me about that crazy mansion in Sedona after I visited. Still live down in Chandler, by the way (started laughing conspicuously out loud in the movie theater when Sicario opened ominously in "Chandler, Arizona"). And thanks! They still go up on 2ndLakeProductions, but they're more rare now and less IMDb-centric.

What's The Meddler about?

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

The Meddler is Lorene Scafaria's new movie (Seeking A Friend for the End of the World). It is about a mother who recently lost her husband, and focuses her time and money toward her daughter, and her daughter's friends. It's a refreshing and honest comedy with real human touches, and Susan Sarandon is as good as I've ever seen her. I absolutely loved it.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I think I heard rumors about the supposed "real assassin" on the Collateral board, but maybe I just read about it before from you, I don't know.

Ha, I had forgotten that you got hit with the 60-minute posting quota for the "Almost Human" thing, although you can't be sure either ("I thought it had to do with some minor trolling on the Collateral board" - deltajuliet, Sep 5 2009) Now I wonder if being forced to authenticate my Systematicer account had to do with this "project".

For nostalgia's sake, here is the archived main page from May 2008:
http://web.archive.org/web/20080501040704/http://www.imdb.com/board/10017619/

By the way, some actual promotional material recently appeared on the "Almost Human" page. Before I only knew of this French poster that is now used on the letterboxd page for the film: https://letterboxd.com/film/almost-human-1927/

I think I heard rumors about the supposed "real assassin" on the Collateral board, but maybe I just read about it before from you, I don't know.

I have no choice but to assume the project was IMDb famous.

I'd bet it did, and where the heck did you find that quote? That absolutely sounds like 2009 me, and as I approach 30 my mind and memory are certainly starting to go. Maybe it was both? I don't know. But what a worthy endeavor to archivally memorialize Almost Human at the height of its fame. And props on finding that new poster, I wonder where it was hiding.

1. Horace and Pete (Louis C.K.) [dramedy mini-series]
2. Toni Erdmann (Maren Ade) [alienation & existential cinema by way of father-daughter relationship drama, social satire, feminist drama]

Bill Murray? Sounds good.

3. The Blackcoat's Daughter / February (Oz Perkins) [atmospheric psychological/supernatural horror]
4. 路边餐 / Kaili Blues (Gan Bi) [the future of cinema, hypnotic mindbender]
5. Christine (Antonio Campos) [film]
6. Homo sapiens (Nikolaus Geyrhalter) [wordless experimental documentary, post-apocalyptic/post-human earth evocation, meditative mood piece]

Most intriguing. Where do you even hear about and see something like that, though? I think I'm hot
sh t with my Top 10 list, then promptly get put in my place by art house fare I've never even heard of.

7. Der Nachtmahr / The Nightmare (Akiz / Achim Bornhak) [arthouse creature feature, psychological horror]
8. Manhattan Night / Manhattan Nocturne (Brian DeCubellis) [NYC-based present-day low-key neo-noir]
9. 人 / Three (Johnnie To) [cops-and-robbers(-and-doctors) suspense, prolonged-build-up action movie, morality play, chamber piece]

Definitely need to find this. While I dig Johnnie To, part of that love comes from a John Woo nostalgia I haven't been able to quench in around 15 years. That being said, The Raid and Raid 2 have put Asian action cinema back on the map, at least internationally.

10. 海まだ深く / After the Storm (Hirokazu Kore-eda) [understated protagonist-centric family drama, loser portrait]
HMs:
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (Oz Perkins) [gothic tone poem, evocative ghost horror]
Bo Burnham: Make Happy (Bo Burnham & Christopher Storer) [stand-up comedy show]
La deuxième nuit (Eric Pauwels) [personal love letter, essay film]
The Invitation (Karyn Kusama) [dinner party thriller, paranoid chamber play]
Le convoi / Fast Convoy (Frédéric Schoendoerffer) [on-the-road action, drug-smuggler thriller]

Also need to find, right after watching Mean Guns. I promise I've been meaning to watch it. I don't know why I haven't. Really no good excuses at this point. Sorry.

Rick and Morty: State of Georgia Vs. Denver Fenton Allen (Erica Hayes)

F ck yeah. This was awesome.

Midnight Special (Jeff Nichols) [superhero movie/action-thriller subversion, spiritual genre film]
Anomalisa (Charlie Kaufman)

I really didn't like this movie, which surprised me because Charlie Kaufman is a genius. But it wasn't particularly funny or engaging, it was just slow and sad and uninterestingly surreal. I absolutely get this is a divisive movie and some love it, but unfortunately I wasn't in that demographic.

Sausage Party (Greg Tiernan & Conrad Vernon)

Tried to stay with it, but it never addresses the drawbacks of hedonism, it only proclaims that religion is bad and food orgies are good.

Sully (Clint Eastwood)
The Bronze (Bryan Buckley)
Deadpool (Tim Miller) [comedic superhero movie refreshment]
Elle (Paul Verhoeven) [genre subversion, feminist thriller, drama]
The Lobster
Deadpool
Manchester by the Sea
Hail, Caesar!

Took my mom to this. After, she asked me, "Why did you bring me to this?"

華班 3D / Office 3D (Johnnie To) [Brechtian 3D musical, business life denouncement, deceptively escapist Zeitkritik]

Interesting.

Son of Saul
The Night Of
The Hateful Eight
Bone Tomahawk

Heard good things.

The Nice Guys
The Witch / The VVitch: A New-England Folktale
Hell or High Water

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I remember now, I saw a special report on the "IMDb Collateral board assassin" on CNN.

Well, at the time I was "impersonating an IMDb admin" by way of very officially warning users that if they don't cease making threads about their lists and asking other users to rate X movie on FG their account will be deleted. But maybe it was the combination of the two that resulted in the action.

I save threads, that's what I do. And that quote was from this thread:
http://members.chello.at/my.webspace/Almost-Human-comments-deleted.htm

>Toni Erdmann<
Not Bill Murray. Jack Nicholson

>Where do you even hear about and see something like that, though?<
All over the internet. One mention somewhere is enough and I'll look into it, and if it looks interesting off I go.

>Three <
I think this will be too much prolonged buildup for you, all the action is compressed to one climactic final sequence. Many other Johnnie To films should serve you much better. If you haven't seen it check out 'Breaking News', that's basically his "The Raid" (in his case it's gun fu, obviously). Not as great but you should enjoy it, I think.

>Anomalisa<
Generally speaking I suppose that one needs to have certain narcissistic tendencies to be able to relate to that film.

>Hail, Caesar!<
Your mom's review sucks.

>Toni Erdmann<
Not Bill Murray. Jack Nicholson

>Where do you even hear about and see something like that, though?<
All over the internet. One mention somewhere is enough and I'll look into it, and if it looks interesting off I go.

>Three <
I think this will be too much prolonged buildup for you, all the action is compressed to one climactic final sequence. Many other Johnnie To films should serve you much better. If you haven't seen it check out 'Breaking News', that's basically his "The Raid" (in Johnnie's film it's gun fu, obviously). Not as great but you should enjoy it, I think.

>Anomalisa<
Generally speaking I suppose that one needs to have certain narcissistic tendencies to be able to relate to that film.

>Hail, Caesar!<
Your mom's review sucks.

hehe, the 'Almost Human'-incident sounds fun!

My top 7, going by IMDb dates (still got A LOT of stuff to see):

1. Toni Erdmann
2. Arrival
3. Paterson
4. Moonlight
5. Wiener-Dog
6. Midnight Special
7. Captain Fantastic

yours:
Nocturnal Animals - actually, I've seen the first 4 minutes of this, because I went into the wrong screening, whilst going to see Paterson
Midnight Special - 8
Arrival - 9
Silence - 6

Art should comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

Not seen Manchester By the Sea? - it's a great film as well.

I just saw your "top 100" list, we share a lot of the same favorites even the lesser known films such as West of the Tracks. Especially like that you included several titles from Douglas Sirk as well and I could go on - Clair Denis etc. Only one I find odd, is that you rate Truffaut's Fahrenheit 450 so highly?
Also what did you like about 'Gertrud' and 'L'éden et après', I know they have no relation to each, but what did you find particular interesting about them?

Er, yeah, don't let the strange opening deter you if you would have otherwise seen it. It's been said the nude overweight women represent the ugliness of one character, but it wasn't necessary and the only fault I could really give the movie.

Paterson is one whose trailer just rubbed me the wrong way. He drives a bus and writes poetry? Just came off as artsy and uncompelling.

I can promise you a day of reckoning that you will not live long enough to never forget.

Re: Top 10 of 2016 - And Last IMDb Thread

I saw an Australian film last year called Goldstone which climaxes with a really great shootout scene, and I literally thought "that user deltajvliet would dig this." (I seem to remember you had an extreme fondness for intense shootouts).

I also participated in the Almost Human prank. Unfortunately, my user comment was deleted, perhaps because I plagiarized parts of it from a professional review of David Lynch's Inland Empire (but it had some creative edits to make it about Almost Human! ) Good times.

Oh, and:

1. Moonlight
2. Goldstone
3. The Rehearsal
4. Personal Shopper
5. Harmonium
6. Manchester by the Sea
7. The Age of Shadows
8. Neruda
9. I, Daniel Blake
10. My Entire High School Sinking Into the Sea

The Age of Shadows has some pretty epic action setpieces as well. Check those two movies out.

Peace.
