Spielberg is a weird case. He is extremely iconic and one of the few directors the general population knows, but among film fans he has A LOT of critics (and also a lot of supporters). Personally, I think the guy is massively overrated by some and massively underrated by others, but I don't think there's an actual consensus about him to consider him underrated or overrated in general.

I can't think of any directors that hasn't got any backfire (Nolan? he's always criticized) who also has its fair share of stinkers other than Ridley Scott.
He has directed more terrrible movies than it's worth listed and somehow he always skips the criticism.
I mean if Nolan directed G.I. Jane and Robin Hood I would be very interested in those responses.

George Lucas Even when you consider the original Star Wars, I've always thought it's obvious that the man can't direct a film to save his life. He even seems to hate working with actors. He's a great conceptualist and world-builder, but a piss-poor writer/director.

Quentin Tarantino I used to think he sucked because the first of his films I actually watched were Kill Bill and Death Proof, both of which I not only disliked but outright hated. However, I then watched some of his other films, both older and newer, and I loved them. Still, based on these experiences, I still think he's slightly overrated.

Alfred Hitchcock He had some good ideas and was an innovator in many ways, but his penchant for using obvious and incredibly fake-looking sets (even for the time) often ruined his films for me. A lot of his films have also not aged well at all, Psycho being an exception mostly.

Ridley Scott He made a single indisputably great film: Alien. The rest were mixed bags, even his classics like Blade Runner.

James Cameron He's made a few great films that merit his reputation, but the vast majority of his filmography is composed of total stinkers or effects-laden "state-of-the-art" B.S. that isn't so state-of-the-art even a year after release.
