It's really not. You can still hear everyone around you and any sense of privacy you have is illusory. You don't have boundaries or peace and quiet.
I had a cubicle in an office where constant interaction between employees was a necessity, so in that sense it wasn't awful. I liked most of the people I worked with, and the work was interesting.
But functionally it's really no different than a completely open floor plan with desks, except maybe for the small bonus of having your own work surface without other people's crap on your desk.
