Re: homosexual?
thanks for clearing that up I read it somewhere and then I didn't think I saw it here on imdb, I would have thought they would have said something about his marriage being arranged by MGM.

Re: homosexual?
no for fake
Re: homosexual?
I never heard that...... but why does it matter so much? He was a great actor, and seemingly a very nice and warm person. It is the person as they are inside that I am interested in, not whether they are gay or straight or otherwise. That to me seems so trivial, gossipy.
Re: homosexual?
I'm reading Farley Granger's autobiography in which he absolutely confirms that Van is gay.
Re: homosexual?
What a nice couple they would have made!

Check Amazon
For the benefit of those who don't know it yet: Amazon (the internet bookstore) has a new feature, called "Search Inside". (All you have to do is to have bought at least one item from them.) It is really REALLY useful to find information, and from generally reliable sources.
And yes, there is a "search(able) inside" biography of Van Johnson. :)
Re: homosexual?
Well, if he is gay, then he did a marvelous peice of acting in In The Good Old Summertime. The scene with Judy Garland, beneath the Christmas tree, is very hot. Oh well, it just goes to show you.
Re: homosexual?
I know that is true. When he was kissing her foreheard that scene is HOTT,IT made we wish I was Judy Gardland.
Re: homosexual?
When he was kissing Judy Garland I wish I was Van Johnson.

Re: homosexual?

Re: homosexual?
I find him so attractive too. If I were Miss Fisher I would've been after him from the very beginning. We'd have a hundred babies by the end of the movie.

Re: homosexual?
I believe as it goes, he started off str8 but questioning, got to broadway and banged a few choirboys (and allegedly Gene Kelly!!!) especially while he was in the broadway musical 'pal joey'. When he got to hollywood in 1940 he was definitely bi, at least for probably the next decade as towards the end he had a daughter, and over the years from then on became soley interested in guys. In fact, the preceeding is a very typical evolution of men 'questioning' their sexuality. Someone on these boards is also claiming he met Van Johnson in a hotl Van was staying at while appearing in a play, and that Van repeatedly kept telling the young man and his friend that they were muscular and hot and anted to know how often they worked out. He also allegedly kept saying how big their muscles were. The two boys were in their teens. Of course, all that is alleged, but his one and only wife confirmed Van was gay. His daughter says he was always cold and aloof.
Van and Judy in 'In The Good Old Summertime'
Oh, I couldn't agree with you more... I do love that scene. It's probably the hottest scene in a classic musical ever. It was quite shocking to me the first time I saw it.
Actually, it is my favorite Judy Garland movie. She and Mr. Johnson made such a great team. The chemistry was amazing.

Is Van Johnson gay ? Is the pope catholic ? ..oh come on, give me a break...of course he is
Re: homosexual?
Van is outed in Farley Granger's recent autobiography "Include Me Out"
Re: Gay?
Then Farley's book is out? Or is it in bookstores yet? Van is in Farley's autobiogrphy? Is Van out-raged? or is it just an in-consistant account?
Seems sort of out-rageous to remain in-different about these little ins and outs of everyday tidbits which go in-to one ear and out the other.

Re: homosexual?
I ALWAYS found VAN JOHNSON HOT!
Glad to know my own gay fantasies had some basis in reality.

Re: homosexual?
It was an open secret in Hollywood, after his arrest. Other than the fact that I find him totally hot, who cares?

Re: homosexual?
Van Johnson was gay. Everyone knows it by now, I thought. Personally, I never cared for the guy as an actor, and I find it laughable that he was considered handsome or sexy. He may have been a nice fellow, but....handsome and sexy? Ha. I couldn't care less that he was gay, however. Many actors are, and were.
