A Nightmare on Elm Street : Freddy was a TEEN killer, not a SMALL CHILD killer, in the original

Freddy was a TEEN killer, not a SMALL CHILD killer, in the original

When everybody discusses whether it was a good idea to make Freddy here a child molester (as Craven at one time considered), they always seem to miss a crucial point: in the original movie, Freddy's victims (before and after his death) are always seen as teenagers (especially when played by 20 something actors).

Nowhere evr (not even in the tv series flashbacks) is he ever seen killing actual kids.

Sure they say he's a child murderer, but all the teens here are referred to as child, kids, etc all the time, thus "child"/"kid" really is meaningless here to say he actually killed little children.

So even while it's obviously implied he's also a rapist or at least a sexual sadist, his target being actual teens makes it still kosher (for us to "root"/"like" him).

And that clearly was missed by the remake: by making explicitly/strictly a child (prepubescent kids) molester, they totally warped the Freddy persona and turned him from an awesome villain into a lowlife scum people can't wait to see gone and done.

And since Freddy is the actual main character people are paying to see (NOBODY went to see Mara or the other Twilight filler cast), that kinda ruins the show.

Yeah, there was no Springwood Slasher in this piece o' *beep*

Re: Freddy was a TEEN killer, not a SMALL CHILD killer, in the original

It is made clear over and over that he killed children while he was alive in the original series. Little kids. The question is what makes him take so long to come back and start killing them when they are teens. My guess is that him killing children in dreams would not work very well with audiences.

"It is made clear over and over that he killed children while he was alive in the original series."

I already addressed that:
- The main cast (teens played by 20 something actors)) are also referred as children all the time.
- Not once do we EVER see any flashback of scene of Freddy killing an actual child.

Re: Freddy was a TEEN killer, not a SMALL CHILD killer, in the original

Are there flashbacks at all? I thought the reason the "teens" he is after in the movie don't know who he is is because they were children when he was killed.

I haven't seen the movie in years so I'm just trying to remember how it went.

Re: Freddy was a TEEN killer, not a SMALL CHILD killer, in the original

Yes we do we see freddy in freddy vs jason killing a little girl it simply cuts away before he dose the blow but we see her later an what he did he cut her eyes out an freddy in the original series was all ways hinted at being a child molester as well if a man will kill small children he would have no problem molesting them an every time he dose something sexual toward one of the teens thats meant to be subtext of how much of a pervert he is same thing with freddy vs jason when he licks the little girls photo craven wanted to have it said out right in the original but he decided not to do to child molesters in the news at the time so he made it subtext the reason freddy targets teens in the series is explained in each film by the time he comes for revenge the kids are all ways older an the kids hes able to get to each time just happen to be older kids but in freddys dead freddy killed the entire town small children babies you name it freddy killed them all people dont have a problem with him killing kids they simply dont like him being up front about molesting them because the sequels took a child molesting murder an turned him into the hero so by the time the remake came out most people only know him as that butthe reason the remake is so hated has nothing to do with that its because the film is a remake of a classic an its simply crap the story the characters all suck if there is a freddy movie made were robert is freddy an he is killing small children left an right fans would still like it if written well general audiences may not enjoy it as much but fans would still like it if its well written it all comes down to story

Re: Freddy was a TEEN killer, not a SMALL CHILD killer, in the original

In the tv show hes killing people before he comes for them he kills the sheriff responsible for his burning as well as a few people related to the mob before the first movie

Re: Freddy was a TEEN killer, not a SMALL CHILD killer, in the original

it's always been heavily implied in the original series that he was a child molester. you dont need everything spelled out for you. a vast majority of men who kill small children are also child molesters. people dont abduct little kids to sit them in a corner and look at them. it's not rocket science to put 2 and 2 together. there's also a flashback scene in freddy's dead where it's implied he molested his own daughter.

you keep saying "at no point do we ever SEE freddy kill small children"....well duh lol name a movie where a child's torture/murder is explicitly shown? i cannot name one. i would imagine that would get an NC17 rating and never be released in a single theatre. i cant even name a fringe-niche market cult film where a child's murder is depicted on screen. is that really what you want/need in order to believe him as a child killer? seems like you have no ability to read between the lines.

Re: Freddy was a TEEN killer, not a SMALL CHILD killer, in the original

He was a child killer in the originals. That's why the parents burned him to death, then he came back to kill teens.

He didn't kill the little kids in this one, but he still killed teens. They wanted to make this Freddy without the wisecracks and one-liners and make things darker and more gritty.

I thought Jackie Earl Haley did a good job as the character. I like the idea of a darker tone. It's a horror movie, my dear.

I guess we liked Freddy in the originals even though he was a child killer, but now we can't because he was a child abuser, not killer, and he was more dark and sinister in this one, without all the iconic one-liners? Strange set of rules.

Besides, remakes -at least in the 21st century- are rarely good anyway.
