My 600-lb Life : Maybe Erica's family was so cold because…
Re: Maybe Erica's family was so cold because…
Agreed. And she did it all with that kind of snide, "I'm smarter than you are," attitude. Insufferable is a good description of her. I think whether she weighs 600 lbs or not, she would be one of those annoying arrogant type people. I haven't seen the end yet, so maybe she improves, but I doubt it.

Amen.

Amen!
I liked her family. Erica didn't need coddling. She needed to grow up. Her siblings had lives that they couldn't just uproot for her and she cried a river over it.
And let's not forget something crucial that I'm sure accounts for her siblings reluctance to believe her this time Erica HAD HER STOMACH STAPLED WHEN SHE WAS 16! And instead of keeping the weight off, she continued her bad eating habits, popped a staple and became the person we saw.
And once again, she wanted everyone else to fix it and help her but not if it inconvenienced her (like taking away her food).

Maybe her family needs a course in basic psychology. One thing the show emphasizes over and over, if you don't fix your head, no attempt to fix your stomach will be successful. If you're eating because you're depressed, and you're gang raped, which sinks you into further depression, hell yes you're going to keep eating and keep putting on weight, even if you DID have your stomach stapled, that's not going to fix your depression.
Re: Maybe Erica's family was so cold because…
Except her family isn't her.
Her family isn't even close-knit.
Erica is off on her own, as are her siblings. They're not enabling her, they're barely connected to her!
You can't blame them for what Erica refused to face on her own. They didn't rape her, they shouldn't be held responsible for her lack of outcry or aftercare.
And before you go calling me a victim blamer/shamer; exactly how are people supposed to know you've been victimized without you saying something?
Those siblings weren't close to begin with, it's not unheard of that they wouldn't notice "odd" behavioral changes like her overeating again when she'd done it before.

Maybe Erica's family was so cold because…
Yes, Erica's brother and sister were pretty harsh, but my GodErica was making my blood boil after only 2 hours. They've dealt with it for years! I know I sound incredibly mean, but talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Dr. Now was exactly rightErica had zero sense of personal responsibility, and wanted everyone else to fix her problems.
1. She had the nerve to get pissy with her young niece, the ONLY one who was helping her in the beginning, for caring enough to get rid of her junk food. She said "I'll just buy more"
2. After the nutritionist took time to help, she says "She wasted that food. I'll just get more. She wasted her time".
3. Dr. Now sent a therapist to her door, and she complained about not liking talking to strangers. When the therapist explained what she needed to doshe said "well, I don't like being uncomfortable".
4. On the flight out, she whined about having to buy a whole row of seats. Because it's soooo unfair to her.
5. When a young lady was hired to assist her, she complained "I don't like meeting new people".
WTF. Anytime anyone offered her any kind of help, she whined and found a reason to actually complain about the help offered. Unbelievably selfish and entitled woman. She has spent so long letting everyone else care for her, when she got to TX, she complained that she couldn't be alone because she didn't even know her new address?? Ok..I'll stop. I'm just floored at this woman's attitude. It's no wonder her family couldn't deal with her.
