My 600-lb Life : Genuine question. Arent we all addicted to food? Everyone needs food.
Re: Genuine question. Arent we all addicted to food? Everyone needs food
Binge eating and food addiction are a legit mental health issue, food just happens to be their poison of choice. When you watch the episodes there are usually things you can pinpoint in their past that led to their negative coping mechanisms involving food. They're like any other addict, only they need their "drug" to live, it's not about not caring it's about adopting proper coping mechanisms and learning proper diet on top of that. Therapy is essential for all of these people.

For a lot of them that "negative" part happened much later in life.
Something like "I weighted 400 lbs when I was 15 and then I was raped when I was 22". So they can't claim that being raped has something to do with their weight.
Also some things that happened to them in the past (that they use as an excuse for eating) are simply ridiculous. Something like "I eat because I'm depressed because my parents got divorces when I was 6". These people can't deal with everyday life. Most of people on this show are just crybabies who don't need Dr. Now or a counselor - they need few months in a boot camp with R. Lee Ermey to yell at them to finally grow up.

Yes, we need more mindless sheep who are taught to not think for themselves lol, that's what bootcamp is based on. You need to take a psych course, you're clearly clueless.

Yes, because people who appear on this show are not mindless sheep They're clearly independent and productive members of society.

I'll make sure to do that right away. I survived war, poverty, etc (and somehow I didn't end up at 600+ lbs even after moving to the USA), but I'll take a psych course anyways in order to understand people who eat 30,000 calories per day because yesterday the skies were blue.

lso some things that happened to them in the past (that they use as an excuse for eating) are simply ridiculous. Something like "I eat because I'm depressed because my parents got divorces when I was 6". These people can't deal with everyday life.
Susan's parents were divorced, but her father was abusive, she watched him put a gun to her mother's head. That's every day life for you?
Charity was beaten by her father.
Christina had to shelter her younger brother and sister from their parents' fighting and we don't know what the extent of that fighting was, if it ever got physical, but nobody sheltered Christina from it.
Ashley D's parents were divorced, but her mom was a heroin junkie who abandoned her kids, then she was sexually abused by her babysitter's husband and thought keeping quiet about it would stop him from doing it to her little brother and sister.
Chay's parents, a real mess, this is obvious even 20 years later just looking at his mom, and you know what? My family knew a guy who also got told by his mom that she should never have had them and she treated him like crap all his life, their relationship was Dateline worthy.
So no, in those instances it's not JUST divorce happening, divorce is just one of many traumatic things these people were put through at a young age when they didn't know how to process it.

As a matter of fact - that was every day life for me. I grew up in a war-torn country. Somebody put a gun to somebody else head? That's it? Trigger wasn't even pulled? That's the reason why somebody got to 600+ lbs and became bed-bound?

Re: Genuine question. Arent we all addicted to food? Everyone needs food.
No, we are not all addicted to food because we need it for survival. Addiction is an act that is done compulsively even though it negatively impacts the persons life.
It's even different part of the brain that lead to hunger and the part that causes addiction. Since areas of the brain work together, some with food addiction say they "never feel full," but then it's their addiction center that is also playing a role.
So you're right, those with addictions almost always need real therapy to modify their behaviors that lead to their destruction.
