Hans himself considers John Williams the greatest film composer, I have to agree with him.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
One of THEE best composers of all time. Hands down.
After watching the final scene of Inception with the music playing in the background, it was amazing. Even I downloaded the soundtrack myself. Indeed this man is brilliant. Loved his previous music on Modern Warfare 2, and Pirates 2 and 3. Truly an amazing composer.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
On Modern Warfare, Crysis etc, he only did the main theme. Don't mix this up.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
you probably havent heard of Ennio morricone and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
you sir have not heard of Clint Mansell
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
Clint Mansell is a great composer but Zimmer (i think) is better.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
Definitely, this guy is a genius. He makes my top three: James Newton Howard, himself, and James Horner (though I do think Horner has gotten a little overrated and his music has kind of gotten into a slump). I admit, that last scene in Inception got to me, I never knew music could cover you in goosebumps like his do. He has gained my respect.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
One name: John Williams.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Rachmaninov, Mahler, Dvorak, Haydn, Wagner, Stravinsky, Schubert, Vivaldi, Verdi, Rossini, Schumann, Debussy, Chopin, Grieg, Verdi, Strauss, Sibelius, Bartok, Orff, Holst, Saint-Sans, Prokofiev, Paganini, Liszt etc. etc.
Seriously, normally i'm the one defending Hans Zimmer here. But these type of threads are seriously annoying and ridicoulus.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
That's very true. These people must have never listened to classical music before.
I strongly recommend everyone to listen to their music.
I strongly recommend everyone to listen to their music.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
Just because you have heard classical music it means you have the right to reject others opinion? If I like his music then I am a video game fan boy?
I see a lot of people name Beethoven, Mozart and all. But everybody seem to be missing the point.
Hans Zimmer creates music for movies, when I saw the Rock I had no clue who he was but after seeing the movie, the soundtrack made me curious enough to check the details of the music composer. Why ? not because he created some super melody like Beethoven, not because he wrote the best music piece ever for that movie, but because he helped the director to create an environment, a kind of feel for the movie that suited the movie perfectly. He created music for the movie that made me like the movie and its scenes even more. As simple as that!!.
Had he done it just once then I would have said he is a nice music composer but then he created another environment for Gladiator, MI 2, Black Hawk Down, and King Arthur. In all these cases mind you I dint know before watching the movie that it was Hans Zimmer who was the composer. But every movie made me check the music composer each time. And each time it was Hans Zimmer, ( though in some cases it was James Newton Howard or John Powell).
After that I surely did start following his music and knew before watching the movie that it was his music, so what? Even then doesn't the scene 1 of Batman Begins transform you & take you into a different zone , the music makes the starting scene of kids playing scene more epic. Anybody who says that Batman scores were mediocre needs to revisit the movies again and see how the music thrusts the scenes into epic proportions from one scene to another. Ditto with Dark Knight and TDKR. If this was not enough Hans went ahead and created POC score, while 1 was pool of composers but everyone knows bulk of compositions were his.
Then music of Sherlock Holmes and finally Inception surely made him the best movie music composer of all time. Hans Zimmer's Time is one of the most epic movie musical piece written ever.
While I also love James Newton Howard, John Powell ( for bourne mainly), Alan Silvestri ( specially for predator and back to the future) Clint Mansel ( Mainly for Lunar Industries) and even A R Rehman as I am from India, Still I have not seen them to be so consistent like Hans Zimmer. Sometimes I watch their movies but I don't feel anything in the movie, because for some movies their music is not that powerful. But Hans always gets me . So movie composition is not always about writing the best musical melody ever but helping the director create an environment that allows the audience to feel and like the movie and its scenes more and no one other than Hans Zimmer can do it better consistently for last 20 years.. PERIOD!!
Minor Correction: When I supported OP I dint mean he was the Best music composer of all time and made him stand next to Mozart etc. BUT best Movie Music Composer of all times.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
I'm pretty sure he means movie composer.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
OP is a videogame fanboy fool.
Zimmer is the king of GENERIC scores, who nobody will remember in a few years, once the novelty value of those blockbusters he scored, will wear off.
Best "composer"?? Are you comparing him to Mozart, Beethoven and Haydn?? That's like comparing a Big Mac with an expensive dish at a 5 star restaurant, made by a master chef.
Fool.
Seriously, I have listened to a lot of composers, and film music composers, and Zimmer is nowhere near true masters like Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Morricone and Elmer Bernstein.
A couple of bland Batman scores (Danny Elfman did it WAY better) and you videogame and comicbook fanboys all go nuts.
Cretins.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
I don't really get how the "videogame fanboy" nonsense has to do with anything, most video games now have wonderful scores, much better than Hans Zimmer.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
To be honest there's only a few film composers who can rightfully be regarded in the same league as Beethoven, Mozart, Bach etc Zimmer etc as much as I like him, is not one of them.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
1. John Barry
2. James Horner
3. Enio Morricone

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
Hans Zimmer's Batman scores are pretty good, but your right Elfman's Batman scores blow his out of the water
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
You, sir, are a hero! ColinChapman, you described it perfect, thanks :) At least here are some intelligent posters on IMDb. Hans Zimmer makes forgettable synth scores. Just watched Ghostbusters with Elmer Bernstein score. So much better than Zimmer's two-note themed Batman scores. Fanboys are indeed cretins and fools. They will realize when they grow up, but until then, they go on us adults nerves on the net. The internet has become such a kindergarten!
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
I like Zimmer. He's a talented and interesting film composer. But:
1.) I think there are better film composers out there. A few come to mind - John Barry, John Williams, Bernard Hermann. Hell, even James Newton Howard and Thomas Newman give him a run for his money, in my book.
2.) Best composer of all time? Really? I'm sorry, but Beethoven blows him out of the water, as do scores of other composers. I like Zimmer, but come now, let's be reasonable.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
in 10 years trent reznor, if he chooses to continue to go down this path (hollywood remake of girl with dragon tattoo is next for him) i believe will be known as the best film composer. lets not forget where zimmer startedmuch more pedestrian roots than reznors already prolific career.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
The Social Network was a horrific score.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
IMO actually it was pretty good, it fitted the movie well .

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
He is a great composer, but best of all time, I don't thnk so. John Williams surpasses him every time. Howard Shore also surpasses him for his Lotr scores alone in my opinion.
And let's not forget the earlier greats like Beethoven and Mozart.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
I'm sorry to say that I do not think Hans Zimmer is even a good composer.
He is a composer gifted with a decent musical ear that allows him to write catchy tunes without being disciplined enough to engage in any formal musical training.
He can't orchestrate, etc. He writes by cultural osmosis, in other words, he writes what he thinks sounds good by absorbing the music that exists around him. He has no musical training and has not had the discipline to actually get into the theory of music and understand why what sounds good sounds good.
So, because he writes in this fashion, some of his scores are effective, others are definitely not. I think he is a truly bad composer with a few truly good scores.
Lion King, for example, is a great score.
Another thing that takes my respect for Zimmer way down is the fact that he honestly is responsible for a very small portion of the final product. He surrounds himself with a gigantic team of orchestrators and programmers, people who know a lot more about music than he does, and he relies on these people to make his scores sound like they do. I read somewhere (this may or may not be true) that for Inception, he simply wrote a 20 minute suite of music and then handed it over to his gigantic creative team of orchestrators and co-composers to assign the music to various cues from the music, to orchestr2000ate it, etc.
Anyway, in my opinion, there are a few film composers who actually have earned the right to be counted with the greats like Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart, etc. For example, Jerry Goldsmith, Ennio Morricone, John Williams, Howard Shore, etc (guys from an older school of film composition that actually put the time in to study music).

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
I did some more research, and I admit I was wrong about Hans. He may not have any formal education, but he did a lot of self teaching and has a pretty good knowledge of the orchestra due to a mentorship from an older composer. This is the interview that righted a lot of my misconceptions about Zimmer: http://www.audiohead.net/interviews/hanszimmer/index2.html
However, I stand by much of what I said. In my opinion, he does not hold a candle to the greats like Korngold, Rozsa, Morricone, Goldsmith, Williams and Shore.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
This is so refreshing. Someone who actually went out and do a bit of research and can admit he was wrong. Don't see that happening here a lot xD
I agree, even if this threat was said 'best film composer of all time' it still wouldn't be true. Let alone 'best composer'.

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
I agree with what you have said about his level of Orchestration skills. They aren't great in some scores, and overall not in the same league as someone like John Powel, but his ability to match sound with scene is very impressive.
15-20 more years and i'd put him in the same league as Goldsmith.

Hey, careful, man, there's a beverage here!

He made the music for two of my favorite childhood films (Lion King) (Prince of Egypt *GENIUS*)
so yeah, I would consider him a beast

Calling someone "the best" is very subjective. I gotta say that every single composer that you guys mentioned in this thread are really really good in their own way.
I'd add to the list
Michael Nyman
Craig Armstrong
Klaus Badelt
Randy Newman
Ryuichi Sakamoto
Joe Hisaishi

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
I looooove Hans Zimmer's music. I just saw the Lion King for the first time in years at the theater and his music literally made me cry. However, if I have to pick the absolute best composer of all time, I have to go with John Williams. He does a lot of the work for the orchestration, which is fairly rare for a composer and takes massive musical skills. He is a true musical genuis, and his score for Star Wars is a masterpiece.
Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
He definitely ranks with the best of all time. Completely agree - when I hear music that literally moves me to tears, 9 times out of 10 it is Hans Zimmer. Musical genius!

Re: hanz zimmer is the best composer of all time
There are many incredible composers today who do ALL their own orchestrations and producing - listen to Christopher Drake and John Venables' scores for the animated DC Batman/Superman movies - every note is written, played, programmed, mixed and mastered by them alone. That is a huge workload and the scores are wonderful.
As for Zimmer having a massive team to help him, there is much truth to that - my audio engineer is Gregg Jackman, uncle of Henry Jackman who is in Zimmer's top tier A team and scored X-Men First Class. There are substantial chunks of films under Zimmer's name scored by others in his team such as Henry and Lorne Balfe.
This is NOT a slur against Zimmer, since actually quite a few big name composers work this way. Why? Simple. More work can be accepted at a time, thus way more money. Secondly, it develops the careers of young upcoming talented composers, for which Zimmer should get an award in itself. Who else in Hollywood does that??? Zimmer has helped a LOT of people go from broke to living the dream.
Finally as for education, well consider that many of Zimmer's team are themselves highly musically trained, at places like Oxford and Cambridge (such as Jackman and former member Gregson-Williams), and these guys look up to Zimmer as a master - how many of your favourite musicians all had formal training? I hold a distinction Grade 8 and LLm diploma distinction (the highest possible levels) on guitar, and I never had a lesson. Not a single one. I didn't study music at Uni but did play in the Orchestra (Nottingham Uni, a top fiver) and met some great musicians. I've now scored two ads, am scoring some short films, all in wildly differing styles, and am inching closer to big Tv/film jobs. NO-ONE asks where did you study music, EVER. Why? Well, does anyone ever ask a director where they studied directing? Of course not! Art forms are subjective, and if the person who counts (in this case, the director/producer) likes what you do, then you're gold. Einstein didn't study anywhere formally, so what.
