Rent alone in Fort Lauderdale runs at an average of $1900 for a 1-bedroom apartment. That's expected to increase as well: the housing market is exploding here and a lot of renters are going homeless just looking for a place to stay. Waiting lists are unbelievably long even for apartment complexes that haven't opened yet.

Florida is facing the worst inflation rates in the country. A pack of 3-4 chicken breasts has been running $25-$30, and meat at cheaper grocers like Aldi is continually sold out.

The average recommended salary to afford a home in Florida is $70,360 a year. Fort Lauderdale's cost of living is 16% higher than the national average. Utilities in Fort Lauderdale will run you approximately $1,000 a month on top of base rent.

It also has a weaker public transportation system than other cities in Florida, which would mean you would need to either buy a car or spend a lot of money on ride-sharing services.

Frankly, you can't afford Florida, especially considering you refuse to get a job.

Yeah, they're pretty affordable at Aldi (if you can find them), and Winn Dixie has good deals on chicken if you're a rewards member. Thighs, wings, and drumsticks are pretty reasonable, too – it's only the breasts that have skyrocketed.

Yep, Walmart, Publix, Target, Winn Dixie (without a rewards membership). The Walmart here has a tendency to sell meat that's bad by the next day, so we don't really shop there.

You don't have enough money, and you don't have the work ethic to get a job that would support anything beyond a cardboard box here.

You could bring in several roommates, as Monicah said, but I don't see that going well for you.

Several of us here have tried explaining that, but then we're the ones who get "bashed" for not being supportive of her, or in a manner, how dare we "attack" her and her dreams. It always baffled me that people never saw what we were saying to her for what it really is: a reality check.

All of the coddling and "support," encouraging her fantasies of living alone and being able to do so successfully, is only hurtful in the long run. It's precisely because she's mentally unwell that she needs reality checks, or she's going to potentially get herself into a dangerous situation, perhaps even one that's irreversible. (I'm referring to her physical health, her financial security, and the very real fact that she's not grasping that she's incapable of coordinating and maintaining everything to survive, much less thrive).

It seems to be the normal now in rich area,where even the middle class can't afford housing, gets over ran in the cities with bums and drug addicts shitting on the streets, and high criminal rates. It's almost inexcusable that middle class can't afford decent affordable housing and I guess that's why there is a shift from living in big cities to more Midwestern rural areas.Big cities in general are becoming cess pools.
