The Hunchback of Notre Dame is the tops for me. Witness for the Prosecution, Hobson's Choice and Private Life of Henry VIII close runners up (though I think he's great in anything). A truly versatile actor!

Re: Favourite Performances

Patcronenberg, I think Mr. Laughton was having a great old time with Abbott and
Costello.

But my favorites are:

Les Miserables
Private Life of Henry VIII
Spartacus
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Sign of the Cross
Mutiny on the Bounty
Rembrandt

Re: Favourite Performances

WITNESS, Great performance...one of those movies I like to watch on a rainy Sunday!

Re: Favourite Performances

The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Rembrandt
Witness for the Prosecution
This Land is Mine
Advise and Consent
The Suspect

The Bribe (supporting heavy as JJBealer)

He also excelled as the soft spoken butler in 'Ruggles of Red Gap' a brilliant light comedy.

His comic touch worked less in Abbott and Costello meet Captain Kidd

Re: Favourite Performances

This is difficult because there are soooooooo many and performances which I haven't seen that I bet is is first rate in them!

I supose Mutiny on the Bounty holds a special place in my heart, as it was the first film I saw of Laughton's. (I saw it because I like the comedian Tony Hancock and he does Laughton as Bligh impressions in Hancock's Half Hour sitcom) As I was watching the film I thought, my God, Laughton is brilliant, simply GREAT! So I checked out some other Laughton films, and found that he was a rare talent, something really special. So my list would be:

Mutiny on The Bounty
This Land is Mine
Witness for the Prosecution
Rembrandt
Ruggles of Red Gap
Spartcus
Hobsons Choice
Island of Lost Souls
Because of Him
Henry V111
The Hunchback of Notre Dame
The Sigh on the Cross

Oh, lets not forget The Night of The Hunter, which proved that he was a wonderful director too!!

Re: Favourite Performances

I only have one favourite:- Mutiny on the Bounty. He was ace in Spartacus aswell.

Re: Favourite Performances

My own personal favourite is "this land is mine"... but it is really difficult to choose as he left behind him many awesome creations:
"Mutiny on the Bounty", "Island of Lost Souls", "Les Miserables" "Rembrandt", "Advise and Consent", "the Big Clock"... to name just a few, brrr... it's really difficult to single one, innit?

That's a film I always meant to see but never got around to. I'm glad you mentioned it.

Re: Favourite Performances

Well, the film has been generally considered by some as "dated wartime propaganda", but I believe that the story as written by Renoir and Nicholls trascends its historical circumstance: I believe it's a great story about one's freedom and independence (from tiranny, from mama's apron strings, etc...) and a great film about teaching and its importance in the upbringing of free-thinking citizens (it was inspired in Daudet's tale "La dernière classe")

And it is superbly served by fine performances, Laughton's towering above all... Oh, well, IMHO at least

Cheers,

Re: Favourite Performances

I know it’s been covered to death, but I’d have to say Witness for the Prosecution. He can be raucous at times, but that’s why it’s so good, so unpredictable.

He said it's all in your head, and I said, so's everything--
But he didnt get it.
