Religion, Faith, and Spirituality : If Jesus came back today
Re: If Jesus came back today
Wrong, dead wrong. You have misinterpreted the verse. The verses that immediately follow make this clear.
Again. It is clear. There will be many who think they are Christians. Who think they are right with God. Who think they acted in His name. But in reality they acted according to their own wills not His.
Just because you lack the ability to understand does not make it gibberish. You are spiritually blind.
I would agree with you but then both of us would be wrong
21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! Lord!’ will enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only those who actually do the will of my Father in heaven will enter. 22 Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ 23 And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’
Again. It is clear. There will be many who think they are Christians. Who think they are right with God. Who think they acted in His name. But in reality they acted according to their own wills not His.

Wrong, dead wrong. You have misinterpreted the verse. The verses that immediately follow make this clear. That's exactly as I described it: The criteria is obedience as opposed to lip service.21 “Not everyone who calls out to me, ‘Lord! But who is depicted as deciding who gets into heaven? (not 'who's a Christian'). Say it with me now:
"Thuh Lord…" Not you. When? At the Judgement. None of that has anything to do with determining who's committing a logical fallacy in the here and now. Nothing the bible says lets you out of that.
Now, back to reality:

But who is depicted as deciding who gets into heaven?
The question here is not who. We already know who. The question is why. Why out of those who call themselves christian are some accepted and others rejected? Is it the flip of a coin? Is God rolling dice? No.
I the Lord search the heart and test the mind, to give every man according to his ways, according to the fruit of his deeds.”
Jeremiah 17:10
God knows who has truly accepted and obey Him and those who merely act the part.
What is more, you yourself testify to the distinct difference between the two groups. Name a so-called 'christian terrorist. Name one.
Now compare. How do the actions on that man stack up to someone like say… the late Billy Graham? If you were to put this named terrorist on trial and attempt to convict them of being Christian would there be enough evidence to convict them? I doubt it. Their acts would be evidence against them as would the honest testimony of those who know them.
The difference in behavior between those who truly love God and those who do not is night and day. The love of God shines out from those who truly follow Jesus. Only a fool could possibly confuse the two based on both claiming to be christian.
I would agree with you but then both of us would be wrong

And again when one reads the New Testament about the life os Jesus one gets a sense of the Mans character. Not really. It's a pretty mixed set of messages, depending upon which group of sectarians was writing which part. There's also the Jesus who cursed the fig tree for not bearing figs out of season (the passage was intended to justify rejection of the Jewish people), who made a whip of cords and lashed the moneychangers; the Jesus who called the Syro-Phoenician woman a bitch, and justified the mistreatment of foreigners (Matt.18:17); Jesus blaming physical disability upon one's sins (John 5:14), and justifying torture (Matt.18:34-35). Jesus needlessly murdered a herd of 2,000 pigs, and of him it's expected by believers that he shall return someday and murder everyone remaining upon the earth besides believers.
Given some of these character descriptions, it's little wonder that Christians like Kevin Swanson are confident they're following the will of Jesus.
Do you think the Jesus you're describing will approve of your actions?

No that is NOT what that passage means.
The fig tree was likened to the Pharisees who professed to be very religious, but whose lives were fruitless. Therefore, Christ cursed the fig tree as an object lesson to all not to be hypocritical.” … Israel had often been symbolized as a fig tree in Scripture; Isaiah 34:4, Jeremiah 24:1-8, Hosea 9:10, Luke 13:6-9.
who made a whip of cords and lashed the moneychangers
Too often, Jesus is depicted as a soft, sappy, guru, instead of the powerhouse He truly was. Incidents such as this show that Jesus was capable of action, righteous anger, and confrontation when it was necessary. One critical point to note is that Jesus personally makes the whip which He used to drive these men from the temple. He didn't pick something up in a rage and start swinging. There was deliberate intent behind His actions, and no mistaking His justified anger.
The sad situation in the temple reflected Israel's spiritual state: stuck in a rut, wealth-obsessed, and uninterested in heavenly things. Jesus' disruption of the business there was certainly against local civil laws. So, it's to be expected that the local guards and priests would be upset with His actions. And yet, nothing in the Bible suggests that He permanently harmed anyone, or any animals, or damaged any property. More over, does He not have a right to object to what others do in HIS house?
the Jesus who called the Syro-Phoenician woman a bitch, and justified the mistreatment of foreignersSound like another mischaracterization. So much so that I cant even place the passage to which you refer.
Jesus blaming physical disability upon one's sinsAnother misinterpretation of the passage. No wonder you are an atheist if I were this Biblically illiterate I would be too. Let me explain something very simple. Do the will of God and you are under His protection. Refuse the will of God and He. Can. Not. Protect. You. And since the devil is also real I shouldn't have to explain what happens to those without such protection.

Israel had often been symbolized as a fig tree in Scripture; Isaiah 34:4, Jeremiah 24:1-8, Hosea 9:10, Luke 13:6-9.Yes. Which is why the withering of the fig tree symbolized God's rejection of Israel. It's been the mainstream interpretation throughout the history of Christianity.
He didn't pick something up in a rage and start swinging. There was deliberate intent behind His actions, and no mistaking His justified anger.Yes, that's exactly how the incident was depicted in its earliest iteration (Mark 11:15-18), citing the biblical sources from which the story had been drawn. It was extracted from Malachi's messenger of the covenant purifying the sons of Levi (Mal.3:1-3; cf. Mark 1:2; 9:3), as well as the oracle of Zechariah: "And there shall no longer be a trader in the house of the Lord of Hosts on that day" (Zech. 14:21b). Jesus' pronouncements were derived from Isaiah 56:7b, "…my house will be called a house of prayer for all nations," and Jeremiah 7:11, "Has this house, which bears my Name, become a den of robbers to you?" It's literary composition, borrowing piece by piece, like a mosaic - not anything which actually happened. Later authors copied Mark and, dissatisfied with its lack of reasoning, embellished the story.
But the issue here is with the depiction - violence and unjustified rage.
Sound like another mischaracterization. So much so that I cant even place the passage to which you refer.Regarding "justified the mistreatment of foreigners," I gave the citation - Matt.18:17. And there's only one instance of a Syro-Phoenician woman in the gospels, so you ought to know which one that is.

Answer not a fool according to his folly…
by Dr. Bill Edgar, former chair of the Geneva College Board of Trustees, former Geneva College President and longtime pastor in the Reformed Presbyterian Church of North America (RPNCA)
Proverbs 26:4-5 – Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes.
The self-confident fool thinks too highly of himself and his opinions, and he shares them freely. How should a wise person deal with him? First, remember that giving him honor is no more fitting than snow falling in summer (Proverbs 26:1). Praise and respect will only confirm him in his conceit. So how should you deal with a talking fool? The advice in 26:4-5 seems contradictory.
“Do not answer him according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself,” that is, do not engage him on his own terms. During Jesus’ last public teaching in the Temple, Sadducees came to Him making fun of the Resurrection, with a story about seven brothers who each married the same woman as each brother died in turn. No children were born to any of the brothers. So, they asked, “In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” If Jesus had answered according to their folly, he would have tried to answer the question, who would have her as wife – the first, the last, her favorite? Answering that question would have drawn Jesus into their foolish thinking. It would be like trying to answer such queries as, “What was God doing before He made the world?” “Can God make a square circle?” “If God is glorified by forgiving sins, should we not sin often?” “When did you stop beating your wife?”
You cannot answer a fool according to his folly, or you will be like him, but you should answer a fool according to his folly, so that he won’t be wise in his own eyes. Jesus answered the Sadducees. “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? He is not God of the dead, but of the living. You are quite wrong (Mark 12:24-27).” The Sadducees were answered. In front of the crowds, Jesus exposed their foolishness, and a scribe congratulated him. “Teacher, you have spoken well (Luke 20:39).”
The wise person will know how to apply this proverb, refusing to be drawn into silly questions, which Paul told Timothy to avoid (II Timothy 2:16-18, 23), yet answering opponents with gentleness that exposes their folly, so that they might have a chance to escape and come to know the truth (II Timothy 2:24-26). Only a fool reads Proverbs 26:4-5 and pronounces it self-contradictory!
I would agree with you but then both of us would be wrong
