Sugar Cane Alley (1983, Euzhan Palcy)
Mikey and Nicky (1976, Elaine May)

Re: Recommend films directed by women

There's probably movies I'm not including. I consider a great director a great director and think it's patronizing/condescending to attribute talent to things people had no control over

"Mikey and Nicky" is my favorite.. by Elaine May. (and its on YouTube)

"The Forest For The Trees" (Maren Ade)

Re: Recommend films directed by women

Ida Lupino directed one of the most memorable episodes of "The Twilight Zone", The Masks.

"Seven Beauties" (1975) was directed by Lina Wertmueller.

I detested "The Piano". My snooty, feminist and super boring film studies professor said TP was the greatest movie of the 90s. I got my revenge when I was given leverage to show a film to our small class and decided on "Heat" (1972), which has all the female characters lusting "in heat" after the beautiful Joe D'Alessandro, who is naked for half the film and couldn't care less about all the female attention being given to him. It is definitely not a movie for feminists. Ha Ha!

"The Slumber Party Massacre" is a much better movie. I always got a kick out of the fact that a woman directed it.

I just saw "Desert Hearts" for the first time last week. I liked it. It was involving. Thank you @Toasted Cheese!

There's a great documentary called "Harlan County USA" (1976), directed by Barbara Kopple.

And then there's Doris Wishman, who directed such mammary masterpieces as "Deadly Weapons", "Double Agent 73" and her final opus, "Dildo Heaven". I can recommend the first two movies as forays into ultimate bad taste. And, ummm, for guys with a certain fetish, KABOOM!

Strangely enough, Miss Wishman also directed "Let Me Die a Woman", which is actually a very sensitive and extremely forward thinking movie about the tormented mental state of transsexuals. It's actually a pretty good movie, and the main subject was sweet and sympathetic.

But, ain't Joe gorgeous?

I wonder under what guise and criteria away from her own bias would she really be able to defend her flouncy statement. Sure, The Piano has some original and interesting cinematic moments, but overall I find the film hollow, pretentious and too detached.

As far as I'm concerned, Campion's best film is the true tale of a NZ author An Angel At My Table - 91' which I find sublime.

Pleased that you did. It is one of my favourite gay themed films and always interesting. The characters really make this film.

To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar! - '95 dir: Beeban Kidron

"The Slumber Party Massacre" is a much better movie. I always got a kick out of the fact that a woman directed it.
Its a pretty good slasher in its own right and has all the right elements to make it work well for its sub-genre.

Re: Recommend films directed by women

If any of them are trannies, it doesn't count.
That would still be a movie directed by a man.

Just because I see it was a movie directed by a woman I am not going to watch it for that woke bullshit.
I really don't care what the sex of the director is.
I will watch it only if the subject interests me and if it happens to be a woman, whatever.
I don't base my movie choices on anyone who worked on or in it.
Except for the best boy.
If it is Cliff Stevens, then I know it must be good.
