This was an agreement the Trump administration signed. Biden is clearly on board.

We either have to put in more troops and increase combat, or get out. There is no reason to keep up what we have been doing for the past 10 years where nothing has changed.

People mention a pullout would render previous efforts less meaningful. Sunk cost fallacy.

A legitimate concern is of course terrorism. Will this lead to more 9-11 style attacks?

Another concern is the taliban, should they win, is an oppressive entity. Although not necessarily the US’ concern.

I will say though that I think that whenever our troops come home from fighting is always Always ALWAYS a good thing.

Yes, everybody stopped believing a long time ago that the Afghan government would become viable. We only stuck around for so long so contractors could get rich and officers and other officials could chase promotions. We have dumped 2.3 trillion dollars into that country and most of it has been wasted or stolen.

The Cheney-Bush Junta is responsible for invading both Iraq & Afghanistan under false pretenses. For the former it was WMD, for the latter getting Bin Laden. 20 years and millions of lives later he isn't satisfied that his policy has killed enough people. ISIS was the result of his Iraq war, the Taliban is still in Afghanistant Bananistan. You lost both wars, George! 2nd worst President ever!

How was Afghanistan invaded for false pretenses?

The reason given was to get Bin Laden. Then when he was surrounded, Bush let him go and moved all troops to Iraq. 10 years later it took Obama to get him. Not to mention 9/11 happened under Bush's watch due to massive intelligence failures. Not to mention his father funded Bin Laden to fight the Soviets, then did Iraq War 1.

1. What are 'Bush's guns'? Sorry, I am not trying to be difficult , but I don't understand. You can rest assured that there were plenty of guns in pre-2001 America, they didn't need to go to Afghanistan for them.

Easily accessible oil? OK. I will take your word for it. It was not part of the calculus back in 2001. People seem to forget now that Al Queda was being sheltered by the Taliban there. Not many people opposed going after them, and that includes us foreigners.

People frame it as though it was a war on terror, for oil. You’re right, I Remember reading in Time magazine about the purpose being al queda, the taliban.

Oil was probably an objective, too, not necessarily for Afghanistan. But I’d imagine that endeavor factored into the Calculus for the broader Middle East strategy which I do think involved securing oil Interests.

And 2 years separated the Afghanistan war and the dumb-dumb Iraq war, which was probably about oil.

I think that they went into Afghanistan initially to get Osama. They stayed because the Taliban were assholes and they wanted to keep the normal folk free of them, and to keep the country from becoming a centre of terrorism again.

Iraq? Fuck if I know. I didn't understand it at the time. I assume that it was one part getting rid of a tyrant, one part hubris, and one part greed.

I think for both, it was also to send a message. The 9-11 attacks were shocking both for their tragic element and for the fact that the USA took a black eye. It made America appear weak. I think the “shock and awe” strategy was at play in Iraq but the audience was also American rivals worldwide. Taking over Afghanistan and Iraq made big statements to the contrary of the statements made by 9/11



With Iraq, I think additionally there was an element of George bush Junior and the broader administration wanting to “finish the job,” so to speak.

Part of the hubris part, as well, was this the idea among the Bush Republicans that non-democratic countries could be 'made' liberal democracies. Whoops!

I don't think there was any specific reason for them wanting to invade Iraq. They didn't like Saddam and saw the opportunity to take him out. They wanted him gone and then thought up reasons why it was a good idea and then looked for evidence to back up those reasons.

Ostensibly it was WMDs.

WMDs and ties to al-Qaeda made him an imminent threat after 9/11. That was what they decided on and they started combing through raw intelligence looking for anything that would confirm it, just like they did with Team B when they wanted to hype up the Soviet threat. As the British said, "intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."
