Paul Newman : Favourite Paul Newman Role

Favourite Paul Newman Role

Butch Cassidy in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Gallagher in Absence of Malice.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Hard to pick since Newman had so many great roles. I'd say Butch Cassidy.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Cool Hand Luke
Harper comes a close second after Cool Hand Luke.

Yes, this is really me.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

I like him in Hombre.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Hud is my favourite, but so many good ones.

Dragline: Why you got to go and say fifty eggs for? Why not thirty five or thirty nine?

Luke: I thought it was a nice round number.

So to get the full effect we have to sit here and watch that gif repeat 50 times.

I am halfway there now.

Cool Hand Luke

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

I liked his character in "THE TOWERING INFERNO".

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

"Cool Hand Luke" but I think "Hombre" is my favorite movie with him in it, mostly because the script was so well-done.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Most of his roles, but since nobody has mentioned it yet, Brick in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

yea, I completely agree. Though I like the Color Of Money, I think he's best performance is the Cat.

Henry Gondorff in The Sting.

"Sorry I'm late guys. I was taking a crap."
And then the greatest poker game in movies goes from there.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

I K, R?

The way he out cheats the cheater.

I love the way they set up that little basement into a gambling den!

The other thing I like about this movie is that they get revenge without killing the villain as it is just too common in movies.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

I loved the twists and turns throughout the movie.
Watching it for the first time, even the audience was stung in the end. Brilliantly written story.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

I wonder who did the voiceover for that.
Jon Winters or Jack Webb is who it sounds like to me.

And Newman was a race car driver IRL but I am sure you knew that.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Not sure of who did the voiceover.

Yes. I have heard that Newman became interested in racing after having made this movie.

I like the movie. I remember seeing it at the drive in when it came out.
I have it on tape. I watched it again about a month ago. Part of it was filmed in Wisconsin… my home state!

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Who cares what role he played. Those blue eyes!!!!

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

LOL!

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Cool Hand Luke

He was excellent in Hud, just not that nice. Pushed away all those that loved him.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

I'd say it's a toss up between BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID or THE STING. Newman was great with light hearted rogues.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Newman was great with light hearted rogues.
These were easier for him to play, due to his warm persona.

The darker roles were more of a challenge.

Norman! What did you put in my tea?

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Darker?

Yeah, it is not a cool thing to be found out to have been a blackface anymore.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Newman could play them better than most of the brooding actors of the 50s.

But I think he preferred the challenges of digging deeper.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

He apparently regretted turning down the lead role in All That Jazz - '79 that earned Roy Scheider plenty of accolades and an Oscar nomination. He felt the character was unredeemable, whatever that means. He was also up for the part of Bobby Deerfield - '77, which Al Pacino ended up doing. Newman was more about his charismatic, mostly good guy image.

Actors need to take chances and be brave in pushing the boundaries of their darker sides. Jonathan Demme wanted Michelle Pfeiffer for Silence Of The Lambs - '91, but she was apparently disturbed by the material. The rest is history for that classic film. Pfeiffer then did Batman Returns - '92 with Tim Burton the following year. Pushed her darker side and gave one her best performances.

That sounds strange considering Newman starred in HUD. Hud was a character who wasn't redeemed in the end.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Hud was an interesting character and one of my more favored Newman roles and all due to the darker aspect of this character that just pushed aside all those that tried to love him.

Perhaps Newman within himself, felt that the character didn't really suit the image he wanted to represent on screen. It really should have garnered him the Oscar. Nice guy performance Poitier won that year.

Wasn't there a gay character Newman wanted to play? I think it was a coach or a teacher.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Newman preferred the challenges I guess. I wonder what roles he really wanted that others did.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Which also happen to be the only two movies he did with Redford.

Man, why didn't those men make at least one more?

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

I perhaps need to see Butch and Sundance again. I never really warmed to it as a whole.

The Sting is very good and I only saw it recently. I found it predictable with one twist I didn't guess, but the conclusion was obvious to me.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Nobody mentions Nobodies Fool and The Road to Perdition to which I think marvelous roles. I always felt bad for him in Road not because of the character but because of the acting.

I haven't forgotten them. I was very much captivated by NOBODY'S FOOL. Newman was fantastic. ROAD TO PERDITION was another outstanding Newman performance. So subtle. I saw it at the movies.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Must've been great in the theaters because that movie looks for it. I think I saw it at the time too, but I dont remember seeing it for Newman cause at the time I didnt even know who he was. I was watching it for Hanks and remember being mesmerized by Love.

Re: Favourite Paul Newman Role

Nearly forgot Harper! He was pretty darned cool in that too.
