Sports : Title IX protects LGBTQ students while WI bans transgender athletes

The Department of Education will interpret Title IX, a federal law that protects students from sex-based discrimination in federally funded schools, to protect LGBTQ students from discrimination, according to a federal notice published Wednesday.

The update is a reversal of a Trump administration policy rolling back Obama-era guidance that directed schools to allow transgender students to use the bathrooms, changing rooms and other school facilities that aligned with their gender identity.

The policy could also affect states that have passed laws barring trans student athletes from competing on school sports teams that align with their gender. Nine states have passed such measures — eight of which passed in 2021.

Assembly Republicans approved bills Wednesday that would ban transgender athletes from competing in girls' and women's athletics — proposals that have pushed Wisconsin into a national firestorm.

Passage of the legislation came amid opposition from nearly 30 organizations, including the statewide body that regulates high school sports and the state's Big Ten Conference university.

Backers of the bills said they would ensure girls and women don't face unfair competition.

"These bills are about fairness and inclusion, making room in competitive sports for everyone to feel comfortable," said Rep. Barbara Dittrich, an Oconomowoc Republican and lead sponsor of the measures.

"This isn’t a hate bill. This is a science bill. Women's sports will come to an end," she said. "Women deserve to have an equal playing field, and that’s what this bill is about."

You can't accept a boy as a girl and then say he can't play on a girls' team.

Thank you. That's the conundrum. It shows why we can respect a transgender person's decision to live as the opposite sex, but we can't make it binding legally.

A bunch of those boys are losing to other boys so they pretend to be girls just to compete and win against the weaker sex.
Once their athletic career is over they will go back to ID as boys.

It is all nothing but bullshit what they do and that it is accepted.

I am proud of my state of Wisconsin to be woke enough to ban boys from competing against girls.
