Religion, Faith, and Spirituality : The inerrant Word of God
Re: The inerrant Word of God
You could believe in God but believe the people who wrote the Bible made mistakes. I don't see what's stupid about that.
Isn't agnosticism the only logical approach to religion?

Re: The inerrant Word of God
If you claim to believe in an all powerful God but also think that that same all powerful deity made such a simple mistake as picking the wrong person to transcribe His message
HIS CRITICALLY IMPORTANT ETERNAL LIFE OR ETERNAL DEATH AND DESTRUCTION MESSAGE…..
THE MOST IMPORTANT MESSAGE IN THE HISTORY OF HISTORY
If you believe that then Sir I must inform you that you believe two COMPLETELY contradictory things.
That is NOT logical. He would not have selected people who would make such mistakes. Remember the tale of Jonah? When people try to resist doing what God tells them to He has a way of making them decide to change their mind.
No. If you claim to believe in a god who could make such mistakes then you do NOT believe in God.

Re: The inerrant Word of God
You could argue that if you believe in both God and in the inherent fallibility of human beings, then there could naturally be some misunderstandings and more to add. This is why some Christian churches also allow the possibility of the knowledge of God deduced from facts about the natural world and human existence, in addition to the Scripture.
Re: The inerrant Word of God
Some churches have been led astray by heretics.
Lets correct that statment because you seem to be glossing over the most important part

Re: The inerrant Word of God
Many of the posters here raised Catholic would be intrigued to hear you describe them as heretics, as revelation is a key element of Catholic theology. I find the (relative) flexibility of the Catholic view, flexible in the sense of allowing new interpretations and scientific discoveries into the tent, more convincing than what you are promoting.
Re: The inerrant Word of God
It still feels like you're making the rules match the book.
Why would an all powerful God, who never shows himself, care what's said about him in any book? He doesn't seem particularly concerned with what we all think of him. If he did, there are a multitude of ways he could set the record straight.
Why did he let the Quran get written? Or anything by Dan Brown, J. K. Rowling, or Pamela Anderson?
As I said, you can believe in an all powerful God without having to believe every word of the Bible. They aren't one and the same thing.

Re: The inerrant Word of God
Lets get one thing straight right off the bat. He did show Himself

Why? Love. The answer is Love.
John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
We are separated from God by sin. The punishment for sin is hell. That debt must be paid and justice satisfied before forgivness can be offered. Only God could pay that debt. Only He could suffer death decend into hell and then rise again, his sacrifice the payment for our sins. That is the Gospel message.
Do you have loved ones? If their lives were threatened would you lay down your own to save them? If reaching them with the message that belief is the only way they could be saved would you spare any expense, any risk, do everything in your power to make sure that message got thru? That is why God cares about the Word. That is why only a fool would believe that He would allow anyone to tinker with it. Too much is at stake. The souls of everyone who every lived are at stake.
In other words why does he allow evil. Simple. It is mercy. He is allowing mankind time to get it's shit together rather than smiting everyone anytime they step out of line.
Face it. Even you, a mere human would never leave something so important to chance. God certainly wouldn't.

You're a smart man. Surely you've encountered the circular logic argument before? How do you counter it?
Re: The inerrant Word of God
Also you don't seem to understand that Christianity and religion are two different things. First of all the way the function are complete opposites.
Religion is man attempting to reach heaven/nirvana/paradise etc. via his own efforts. Christianity is God redeeming us unto himself thru the sacrifice of Jesus.
Second is how membership is determined.
In religion if you personally believe that you are muslim then your are muslim. If you believe you are hindu then you are hindu. If you believe in buddhism then you are buddhist.
Christianity is different. The Word defines who is and who is not. There are are many who believe they are christians and they are dead wrong. The Word itself says that many would come saying "Lord, Lord" and God will say "Away from me you evil doers. I never knew you".
Third is relationship.
Christianity provides a personal relationship with God thru Jesus.
No religion has anything comparable to that.

Re: The inerrant Word of God
I will advise you to follow Islam. There are so many reasons why I say Islam but I will just say a few.
1: After religuous studies conducted by some people(I'd rather not mention names), it was discovered that Islam is the only religion without contradictions or changes made in the holy book. A few contradictions have been found in the bible and so on( I'll advise you Google them ). In the bible , some verses were changed by people(mostly for political reasons). The leaders changed some parts they didn't fell comfortable with. Some of the bibles printed today contain contradicting messages.Sadly, most of today's Christians don't even know this! I am emphasizing on Islam and Christianity mainly because they are the worlds most powerful religions.
2: Secondly, it is written in the bible that Jesus said Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) will come after him. Jesus himself already talked of Muhammad(PBUH).( oh. I forgot to add.. Muslims believe in Jesus, Moses, Adam, Noah, John the Baptist, Abraham, Ismail, etc.) Pictures are shown below.Muslims believe in Jesus not as God, but as a messenger of God. He was one of the penultimate and one of the most important prophets in Islam.

3: There have been scientific discoveries made recently which were already revealed in the Quran centuries ago. For example; science recently discovered the movements if the sun(this has been in the Quran for centuries); science recently discovered the woven structure of space which was already in the Quran. Also science discovered that iron wasn't on from Earth, that iron was gotten from the asteroids which literally fell from the sky( I think a star or something) but this was already revealed in the Quran.( don't worry you will see proofs below). There are many more (about the number of chromosomes, angles in honey comb, the rise of sputnik, the formation of baby in the womb and time in the womb, genetic code of bee, atomic number of iron, the star Sirius , orbit of the moon, ratio of sea to land, the date of lunar landing, and hundreds more). I advise you visit Miracles of the Qur'an . The surprising thing is that Muhammed(pbuh) could neither read nor write, he definitely didn't just wake up one morning and knew events that would happen. You are going to have to be patient in reading the stuff below

Sorry…. I keep trying to add the remaining pics but I don't know the problem. Oh well… Just visit the site and you will find this and more (much more)
4: Miraculous events recorded in history. First, there's a tree in Australia that's on ruku( literarilly on ruku…a position Muslims stay during prayer). And the weirdest thing is that it faces the Kibla( the direction Muslims face during prayer). Second, the appearance of Allah in the sky. This might seem like a coincidence but its really not. The clouds all around the world have distinctly shown Allah's name ( sometimes even Allahu Akbar).

Thirdly , my personal favourite … In the year 2001 there was a powerful tsunami in Indonesia. The tsunami destroyed everything. Literally everything except the masjids (mosques) there. All was destroyed but the masjids and ,their contents and people in them. Due to this incident a lot of people converted yo Islam.Fourthly, Allah's name is written on Africa ( literally written on Africa).

Furthermore, in Lagos, Nigeria there was a baby born with a Quran in his hand . Like seriously… in his hand! How did it get there?? A question science has failed to answer. Amazingly , the parents were Christians ( yeah ….were) this incident made the parents convert to Islam.

There are many other miracles but I’ve gotta stop somewhere.
I don't think I can go on anymore( I'm very tired now). But remember to visit the site. And if you doubt anything I have written, you can do your personal research.
Lastly. I want you to stop studying Muslims ( if you do) and start studying Islam instead because Islam is perfect , Muslims are not. Converting to Islam seems difficult while converting to other religions seem easy. But think of it this way… Nothing good in life is ever easy. Only when you find difficulties along the way is when you know you are going the right way. Good luck!

Then there's the rampant misogyny, anti semitism and violent killing that comes along with following Islam for many.

Re: The inerrant Word of God
Then of course there is also the simple fact that the Bible is the single most scrutinized document in the History of mankind translations have been checked rechecked and checked again countless times by scholars and lay persons alike. Every single word evaluated for accuracy in accordance with the meaning of the source material. Also keep in mind that with this sort of subject people can be zealously dogmatic about accuracy. So even aside from the Fact that God simply wouldnt allow mistranslation and would have appointed the most thorough and competent individuals, skeptical scrutiny thru the ages would have ensured accuracy.

The ones who do are comprised of a minority of fanatics who hold their religious delusions in higher priority than facts. That's simply the truth of the matter.

The inerrant Word of God
This thread is intended for those specific individuals who claim to believe in God but think the the Bible is full of errors due to human interference.
If you are on of those, congratulations! The atheists are less a pack of fools than you.
You claim to believe in God yet dont believe His Word is infallible? Exactly which god do you believe in? Because it apparently isnt the one the Bible describes.
The God described in the Word would not allow such specks of dust as we to alter the core message of His Word. He who saw how today and tomorrow would play out before he created the beginning does not make such errors.
You must have an overly high opinion of yourself and the rest of humanity if you think that we could inadvertently alter in any meaningful way the handiwork of God. Even the devil himself who has been striving endlessly against the Father along with the rest of the fallen has had no success save to deceive the foolish into believing it somehow mistranslated. The Lord told us "Those doors I open no one can shut and those I shut no one can open." Just so, the critical message He has for mankind can not be changed.
Uneducated lay-persons may go around claiming the the Bible is full of contradictions but no educated Biblical scholar worth his salt has ever made such a claim. To hold such a view implies not only an utter lack of faith in the God to which you claim to believe but a total ignorance of the urgency of the Gospel message.
