The Walking Dead : Why are e-books so hard to read?

I recently bought about 40 e-books (mainly because they cost about half as much as an actual book) and I'm finding them really hard to grasp as a whole. It's as if I have to have a book in my hands, and be able to turn the pages physically, to make sense of it (which doesn't really make sense). So now I'm actually in the process of buying some of the same books as paper books. What a fucking waste of money!

I wonder if the new (younger) generation doesn't have these problems (they're like: what's a paper book????)….

I'm usually the go-to guy who rips technology, despite being in my 30s, but I like e-books for a few reasons. One, I can download them for free. I love the CTRL-F (finder) feature, and usually have certain keywords I love to search (favorite, being just one of many), and last, I have my laptop connected to my TV, so the print is much larger (and I can increase it even more if I need to).

I have a lot of real books, and it's great that they're mobile, but the text is kinda small, but I've had years of back/neck pain, so I actually prefer e-books.

I don't have a problem with the print size (I can actually enlarge it as much as I want, like you do). It's just that I never seem to be able to get a grip of the thesis as a whole. I sort of wander around reading interesting stuff, and then lose interest.

I don't like them either. You can't annotate the margins of an e-book.

I have a whole box of different coloured marker pens, and I mark different sections with different colours. I also sticky different pages. Maybe it comes from being an academic. But I have to have a physical book to really make sense of it. Oddly, I don't write much in the margins, and I've spent hours rubbing out pencil marks made by previous readers in second-hand books. These infuriate me.

It is a hassle to get rid of the previous owner's scribblings. It's especially bothersome when they've written in pen and have wasted the space with annotations that are horribly misguided and not at all insightful.

I blame my bad habit on the professor who taught seven of my literature classes in uni. She would allot participation points partly based upon the amount you'd annotated the margins when doing the assigned readings the days before.

I don't think it's necessarily a bad a habit (annotating). I think I just have an irrational reverence for the original author's words! Also, a couple of times I've looked at my own annotations (from about ten years previously) and have found myself thinking: What utter rubbish I used to think/write!

but the samsung i think it is, with the foldable screen opens like a book. which really makes it more like reading an actual book. pretty cool.

The only time it's really useful is when you're travelling. Back in the day even when I travelled by plane I'd have two or three actual books in my cabin luggage. Now, of course, I just watch bad movies or speculate about whether it's worth buying the Scotch duty free.

That's how it was for me when I first started using a Kindle. You get used to it after a while and in the end, you'll accept them. They're not the same. They don't smell as inviting as a new book, but they're here to stay, so you may as well get used to them.

Lefties don't necessarily care for progress. Progress towards what is the key question. I admire primitive societies for their generosity and communal ethics.

I find lefties love every culture except the one they're a part of.

Nice! That's exactly what's happening to me now. But there are certain books I can't afford (in physical form). Can you believe I got the complete works of Veblen (Kindle) for about 1.99? Also James Mill's History of India (1.99)! These would have cost me maybe 500 dollars each!

I prefer paper books, hard back or soft cover, I don't care. Whether I'm reading text books or for pleasure, I make annotations, I underline, little marks, put sticky tags or sticky notes at various points.

For me, it's so much easier to flip through the pages if I want to reference different points in the book. I like the feel of the paper flipping through my fingers, the weight of the book, the smell of the paper. Plus, it's easier on the eyes.

The sensuous pleasures of reading actual books! I have a couple of books published in the 19th century, and about a dozen in the very early years of the twentieth. The smell!

e books are for unintelligent spastics, a book with 4,000 pages can be read over 2 nights consisting of 3 or 4 hrs each.
