Best and Worst : Great movies objectively that you don't like?
Re: Great movies objectively that you don't like?
"It seems to me that your idea of objectivity in movies is that a movie can have qualities such as its being good even if no one has watched it, meaning that a movie can be good independently of human experience. (Correct me if I've misinterpreted your stance on this.)
I wouldn't call what I have a stance, that sounds too definitive. I was expressing the opposite of what you think, I was saying everyone thinking a movie is good doesn't make it so because "good" or any other quality related label is merely subjective in nature, I do not think that a movie is good or bad independent of human experience, I think "good" and "bad" are states of human experience, the movie has neither so I don't think a movie can have the quality of being good if no one has watched it and I don't think can after they watch it either.
On the other hand I do think in some way there kind of can be an objective good or bad, I know that might be out right contradiction but I do bounce about between both opposing thoughts. I think ultimately we very well maybe just falling victim to language and what happens when we categorise things, just want too clarify one more time, I was not saying it can have a quality independent of anyone having watched it yet, I just don't think it'll necessarily have one after either.
Re: Great movies objectively that you don't like?
Yes, we're likely the victims of language here, as you say! Heck, even under ideal circumstances it's probably difficult to come across clearly, to be both precise and open-minded, and so on. Anyway, it's not like we'll face huge problems in our movie-going lives if we don't solve this problem, so we can probably let this one slip before we get even more entangled in the web of language. :)
Re: Great movies objectively that you don't like?
LOL I concur.

Re: Great movies objectively that you don't like?
Yep, I have to agree on that one.
Many of the scenes make great wallpapers, but that's about it.
I liked the primate intro, though.

Owww, the child with anger issues is back! Haven't seen you here in a long time.
But well, the fact that you consider them "objectively good" already says that your bitching is pointless. 😉

Anyone who IMDb as a source of objectivity when it comes to judge the quality of a movie is a ****ing retard. Not saying that the said movies are good, not really. But 1) every director made some trash and 2) only people who lack judgement like you use iMDB's top/bottom as an argument.
So, bottom line, stfu! 😉

Re: Great movies objectively that you don't like?
I wouldn't watch any of the Godfather movies, Goodfellas and those mafia movies. Would never watch Braveheart either. And movies like Bourne Identity. Would avoid Human Centipede at all costs. TBH there would be alot on this list of movies I would never watch, but would have a too long list to name them all.
Hated Babadook and The Witch. DESPISED with a passion.
Didn't like Matrix movies or Lord of the Rings. Independence Day was a snorefest.
Don't know why all the hate for Forrest Gump though. That it's in my top 10 favorite movies of all time as is Gone With The Wind. Also liked Titanic, but some things were far-fetched about it.

Re: Great movies objectively that you don't like?
Though I agree with some of your choices, it seems you simply avoid movies with violence in them.
Would that be correct? :)

Hmmmmmm…. How does this even remotely qualify as an "objectively good movie"??

Re: Great movies objectively that you don't like?
Coppola's Apocalypse Now.
It's too easy to imagine this as a collection of discarded cuts from a much better film.
Perhaps it's celebrated for suggesting what it could have been, rather than for what it really is.

Re: Great movies objectively that you don't like?
I'm afraid that if we want to discuss objectivity in movies, we can't avoid the discussion of objectivity in general, and I thought you were up for it by bringing up examples outside of film, but I might have misunderstood your intentions.
We simply have different ideas of what objectivity should be (in order to be useful).
It seems to me that your idea of objectivity in movies is that a movie can have qualities such as its being good even if no one has watched it, meaning that a movie can be good independently of human experience. (Correct me if I've misinterpreted your stance on this.) This, to me, is like having the sound of the tree with only the air vibrations, no brain involved.
I, however, think that no movie can be said to be good or bad or true or false without anyone having watched it first, and that any assumptions about a movie before having any experience of it are pointless. One could of course say that a movie I've watched still contains the qualities that made me think it's good even the day after I've watched it (the tree is still able to produce air vibrations when falling), but then I've already made a subjective evaluation of those qualities.
Therefore, I proposed another definition of objectivity, one where the opinion of several people having watched the movie would inform us as to whether it's good or bad. Much like in science, where many corroborating observations about some phenomenon gives the scientific community enough reason to call something a scientific fact.
Personally, I'd prefer it if the people who create the "objectively good" category are professional critics rather than, say, a horde of IMDb users, hence we have those Top 100 lists at Sight & Sound and the like. I suspect lists like those are the closest well get to objective truth in movies, and even I'm skeptical whether I'd want that objectivity to guide me in finding movies I like. (Instead, I usually try to find a single reviewer with the same taste in movies as me.)
