The ancient Greeks invented democracy in Athens because it was a small city state where the citizens themselves could gather to make decisions.

The U.S. is a federal republic where the power of the states is balanced with the federal government in Washington. This is the whole premise of the electoral college and it's a good one which decentralizes power.

The interests of urbanites crowded in cities do not always take priority over most of the country.

If those who oppose the electoral college are truly consistent they would advocate that the U.S. Senate be abolished as well. No one proposes the Senate be dismantled and replaced with a unicameral legislature.
