Stephen King : What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

Re: What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

Dr Sleep. Wish someone had put me to sleep. Really Mr. King. Did one of your houses need a new roof that year?

The Dark Half. So dull past the premise.

.....

I liked Christine. Great atmosphere.

The Tommyknockers was great fun and had some well-written chapters. As a whole it's a mess.

Needful Things had some delightful moments, but such a stupid ending.

Have gotten halfway through Roadwork. Must say, it has some great writing but the protagonist seems unredeemable and not easy to root for.

I gave-up on:

Rage (slow and no character identification)
Firestarter (formulaic, even for King)
Running Man (dull pro 5b4 se)
The Dark Tower (guess I don't like grown-up fantasy)
Thinner (cheesy)
Eyes of the Dragon (started well enough but just went on without much change)
Gerald's Game (liked the bit about the dog)
Rose Madder (what the hell now?)
From A Buick 8 (cheesy retread)
Cell (maybe should have been a short story)
Lisey's Story (intro had a bit too much information at once)
Duma Key (was all going well until..)
Under The Dome (the intro didn't engage me for such a sizable tomb)
Revival (perhaps I felt distrustful after Dr Sleep, but it seemed to get bad fast)

Re: What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

The Tommyknockers and Dreamcather.

Re: What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

Nice to see some people standing up for Christine, I thought that was one hell of an awesome read, didn't expect that at all. Great characters! To me, the least enjoyables that come to mind are:

Lisey's Story
Under the Dome
Geralds Game
Cell
Black House
Carrie

All of these had their moments I think, but it just didn't click with me.
I kind of dragged through Rose Madder too. I haven't read Dreamcatcher and From a Buick 8 yet, because there's a general consensus that these are awful. I'll pick them up eventually. I find "Insomnia" and "The Girl who loved Tom Gordon" extremely underrated, enjoyed both. I liked 11/22/63 but don't get the rave reviews either.

Re: What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

He wrote Black House with Peter Straub, and you can see Straub's influence in it. I've read it four times, and despite the flying-over sequence which bored me to tears, I enjoyed it. Then again, I also like Straub.

Life can be arbitrary and comes without a warranty.

Could you please help me with something? After reading The Talisman a 16d0 nd Black House, I decided to give Peter Straub a shot. I read Floating Dragon and didn't like it at all. A few days ago I bought Ghost Story just to give Strab another chance. Do you think that if I disliked Floating Dagon, I won't enjoy Ghost Story either?

Re: What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

Hey, I like 'Christie'! I will admit that you have a point with it "going from first person to third person, and then switching BACK for the last third", I was also stumped by that. Still a good book overall.

OK, what are mine; I'm not a fan of 'Cujo' and I'm reading 'Insomnia' now and finding it frustrating. I don't know if I'll end up hating the book, but the plot's being so damn vague that it's getting on my nerves.

Re: What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

The Tommyknockers is tedious all the way through.

Dreamcatcher was good for about 200 pages then amounted to absolutely nothing.

Desperation is the worst in my opinion, I'm still only half way through after 4 years. I can't bring myself to pick it up and finish it.

Re: What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

I've only read six or seven of his stand alones so take my opinion for what it's really worth but I dislike The Tommyknockers. I thought t 5b4 he beginning of the novel was very good but it quickly fall of during it's second and third act especially the history of the town portion. I hated the way he wrote his female characters as well.

Re: What Is His WORST BOOK EVER?

In my book, the worst Stephen King works ever are The Tommyknockers, The gorl who loved Tom Gordon and From a Buick 8.
