Kevin Costner : I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

Too harsh

I don't agree with the bull that once ya hit the big FOUR OHHHHH it's UH OHHHHHH. Not true. It's the slanted view of critics who taint the movie-goer's mind. So many people rely upon a critic in a paper, a magazine, on the radio, on a show...whatever to tell them what to see and not to see. For me it is so simple: I do not like Tom Cruise, therefore, I will not go to a TC movie, I will not pay attention to reviews of said movie, and I don't care one way or another. I have the respect for others who do enjoy his work to see it, praise it, whatever. I don't trash the actor on the actor's page. I can't see why the same cannot be done for my favorite actor Kevin Costner. AND...I do wish he could have played Indiana Jones's bro. That would have been good. Not too late, really.

Re: Too harsh

He still has it - his last few films like Mr Brooks and Dragonfly show his talent.

His age? well no won't play a 30 year old but then again are all 50+ year olds stationary?

Yes your parents might be fuddy duddy but some 50 year olds I know are racing mountain bikes and beating 30 year olds so don't come up with ageist stereotypes.

Maybe he is doing other things in life-like enjoying his band tour of Italy etc.

Still one of fave actors.

Re: Too harsh

He made a Turkish Airlines commercial and came to Turkey for it.
It s not a good sign for his career i guess...

Re: Too harsh

Who wouldn't put a little extra cash away for doing an airline commercial, a beer commercial, a shoe commercial, an Apple computer commercial, etc? Well, KC has done all of those. He was in Turkey anyway with his band. Why not? If the opportunity arises, carpe diem.

Re: Too harsh

This topic remind me Nick Cage...
Goodbye my career, goodbye my friend

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

Tom Cruise would still be an A-lister in his late 40s if he didn't go nuts a few years ago with his scientology.

ng of the world…

Actors do commercials in other countries all the time. George Clooney, Harrison Ford, Brad Pitt have all done them. It's no big deal.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

All he has to do is make another western! Please, I'm running out of good westerns to watch!

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

it's like Russel Crowe took over he's movies since Gladiator
cause Kevin Costner used to do that kind of movies

Re: This guy IS king of the world…

Russell Crowe-bar is NO replacement for Kevin. Never will be. It's insulting to even compare the two...especially on KC's birthday. That RH drivel RC was in was just awful. RHPOT reigns supremely over that other version. Period.

Re: This guy IS king of the world…

his not doing that bad when you think of other 80s/90s major actors whos careers has nose dived, Steven Segal , Van Damme, Tom Berenger, Val Kilmer, Peter Weller, some of these guys havent had a major cinema release for over a decade.

remember also Kostner hasn't got a franchise he can fall back on like Stallone, Ford and willis have. he was also never really cool enough to get Tarintino style resurgence like Travolta and Willis did . I also agree that Tom Hanks has mopped up the few roles left suitable for him. But he will have another hit sooner or later but looks like he will have to produce it himself.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

He had his day in the sun as a super star leading man, but consider that since then he has done some excellent character parts in films like The Upside of Anger and The Company Men. I don't think he really needs to be the top guy as when he was, he pretty much accomplished things most actors only dream of- winning Oscars, producing and directing his own films, etc. Now he seems to be just doing what he wants to when he wants to. Good for him.

Kevin Costner & The Modern West (Y)

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

This site is refusing to let me start a new post, so I'm responding to an old one. I thought he had another child with the Rooney girl, Bridgit is it? A boy. Liam or something. That would make seven. I would also swear he had four by his first wife. They were making fun on him on E back in the day for finally getting a girl w 238 ith his second when he already had so many kids. I'm just curious now.

Lay off already

What has his kids got to do with anything? FYI...KC has 3 kids with Cindy. Only 1 child from a relationship (rebound) and 3 kids with wife 2. I don't understand why anyone would make fun of this. Are they ignorant morons? Look at old Mel Gibson. Now that's the one you can make fun of. He's made a total ass out of his self and has been very S####y to the woman of baby 8. Kevin Costner is a very admirable father to his kids. Gossip is a dirty word. People need to stop judging this man for everything. It infuriates me to hear somebody say, "Oh, I used to like KC until he made Waterworld. I'll never forgive him for that." Morons should say this: "I go by all the critic reviews since I can't make up my own little pea brain and need somebody to do it for me. My kid is right all the time so I listen to my kid." (and this kid is getting Fs in school because he watches junk all the time. Can't go to a movie unless it has laser beams, naked women, raunchy jokes, and fast cars. DUH

Re: Lay off already

between 1990 and 1995 he was among the top 3 (Schwarzenegger, Costner, Willis or Stallone).

Re: Lay off already

KC's franchise is a very hot band that has sell out concerts everywhere they go. It's called Kevin Costner and Modern West. So the OP doesn't know anything. Sure sequels do well but don't you ever get tired of the retread of one? They just kinda do the same thing over except put in a couple of new faces. Look at the Pirates movie. Sure, it's got Johnny Depp. That's fine but the formula is basically the same stuff. With all the new material out there, why does the studios keep wanting old stuff? Do we really need a Rocky 8? Or Spider Man 12? Or take an old tv show and make a movie out of it? There's just too much new writings out there to do that.

Re: Lay off already

So why doesn't John Wayne getting flack for doing one western after another? That was his basic genre BUT I will say each one was a bit different. I haven't seen all of them but my favorite is True Grit. Don't forget that John Wayne had forgettable movies too. Every actor does. But that doesn't mean he should be hated and dissed and put down. Clint Eastwood also has had some ups and downs. He's done some different stuff too. KUDOS. I just can't understand why people are so mean about Kevin's projects. They don't have to go see them and they act like somebody's gonna blow them up if they don't. It's just stupid.

Re: Lay off already

Costners having a bit of a come-back I reckon.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

I think in Mr. Brooks he was excellent, showed his talent - he is still a top actor, without good movies though

Re: this guy IS king of the world…

Kevin Costner doesn't need to apologize to anybody for anything. He makes the movies he likes. If they don't go over well, so what? No going back. He's a very stand up guy and finishes what he starts and doesn't moan about it. He's not fairly judged. HAPPY EARLY BIRTHDAY (tomorrow the 18th) Kevin.

Re: this guy IS king of the world…

Why did he drop out of Django Unchained? that movie could of helped his career.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

Times have changed, you cant stay on top forever

A PLUS forever

He did not need Django to help him out and he was doing Hatfields and McCoys which is a real top winner with everybody. If people were not so continuously critical of everything he does, it would be so much better. The man has a gift in the talent department and he is around to stay.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

Open Range should have been his major comeback. An exceptional directorial effort and the best western in a very long time. His performance was actually quite impressive. I've never seen that side of him before.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

I heard he’s a major douchebag. Check out the extras on “Field of Dreams.” There’s a segment, where real, MLB retired players, show up to watch the movie with Kevin (yeah, I know, stupid) and at the beginning, one of the players, tries to talk to Kevin, and perhaps be a little over familiar with him. Kevin, gives him the snobbiest, dirtiest look and attitude. You can see the player is a bit affected by the mal-treatment. Later, after the movie has been watched, the player is barely even giving Kevin any attention, or infatuation. You might not notice it, if you weren’t like I am, but being told to watch for it, you’ll notice it.

Very telling of the kind of person Kevin Costner is.

You were told wrong. There is no truth whatsoever about that. He has the greatest respect for everyone except those who call him names. Would you respect someone who called you what you called him? Get a life.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

My dad and his girlfriend went to the Midnight Star casino in Deadwood, South Dakota which is owned by Kevin Costner. They didn't see him but heard nothing but good things when he drops by now and then to see how things are doing.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

...Well he is a bonafide movie star for sure.

I too used to remember when Kevin Costner ruled Hollywood and I have no idea what went wrong.

Although, I suspect somewhere in 1993 (A Perfect World) everything fell apart thereafter and two years later "Waterworld" became American Folklore for the Internet generation.

...Back then, we weren't too concerned about Box office results worldwide.

Go figure!

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

I don't think he has anything to feel bad about with the career he has had so far. He has done better acting in these later movies than he did in his blockbuster younger days. There are many actors who would love to have this kind of longevity.

So what?

Might have something to do with the fact that he doesn't give a rat-**** about Hollywood or spending his entire life sucking up to reporters and producers, just so he can get the lead in the next special-effects crap festival Hollywood sh**s out for the adolescent crowd.

He's made enough money to last him & his family for a couple of generations at least, and only works when he wants to, spending most of his time with his family.

Compare that to the rest of the plastic Hollywood phonies, and see who's happier.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

Between 1987 and 1992, Costner had a number of movies that did very, very well at the box office:

- Untouchables
- Field of Dreams
- Dances with Wolves
- Robin Hood
- JFK
- Bodyguard

That's an average of 1 big box-office movie a year, for six straight years.

After the Bodyguard, it all dried up for him. Not one really strong box office film since then.

I think this is what surprises people the most, to go from being so hot to being so cold.

What was the reason? Was it the quality of the movies themselves, or other factors, such as the media? I tend to think it was the films themselves. I saw practically every movie Costner made from 1987 to 1992. But then I saw his next 3 films:

- Perfect World
- The War
- Wyatt Earp

These films weren't awful, but they just didn't hold my interest as the movies of his 6-year streak did, and that's when I lost interest in Costner, and I've barely watched one movie of his since then.

It should be against the law to use "LOL" unless you really did LOL!

Re: remember this guy IS STILL king of the world…

that's your loss. That is also childish and unfair. In this world not everything can be up to snobs' opinions. Nobody has a perfect record. So why did you even bother to come here and dig up an old issue that really has no relevance today. Kevin Costner is doing just fine and sure doesn't need you in any way.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

Christian Bale has never b 1c84 een anywhere near as big a star as Kevin Costner were during Robin Hood: PoT and Bodyguard.

He was soooo huge back then.

Other bigstars were Cruise, Gibson, Hanks and Ford.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

He was a very good looking Guy, back in the Day. He's not bad looking now, but back then, I can see how He became a big Star.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

The Hollywood machine kills careers. It only takes one or two under-performing box office busts to knock an A-lister off their pedestal. Even Madonna got that treatment. She gave a decent performance in Evita, but Hollywood never forgave her for Shanghai Surprise and that other forgotten turkey(something with a tiger in it???). After that she was stuck with her music career (oh, boo hoo for her), which s currently outperformed by the Gaga machine.

2013 Best Oscar winner Daniel Day-Lewis?

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

How could you forget Mr. What's-his-face?! He's only one of the greatest actors in history. That made me laugh.

As for Costner, his heyday is mostly behind him, but he has 2 movies coming out this year that seem to look promising. He seems to be starting to go the Liam Neeson route, ie becoming one of the "older gentleman" archetypal action heroes. He won't rule Hollywood like he once did, but he can achieve a new type of star status, vis-a-vis the aforementioned Neeson, Willis, etc.

What fresh hell is this?

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

4 years after the org. post

Anyways since people all think that Kevin Costner isn't a name anymore, can you prove your contacts to the industry and Costner's Manager because you must have a knowledge on how many scripts he gets a week, because of course it couldn't be that its Costner himself who isn't a greedy sob and therefore really needs to feel for a movie before he steps up and makes it.

After all not all is like Cage

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

SnoozeAlarm he made other movies that came out before 87 that did good at the box office like :Silverado, Fandango, American Flyers,

I think it was all due to Waterworld" and "The Postman". Expensive film that became expensive flops pretty close after each-other. His career never recovered after that.

Re: I remember this guy used to be king of the world…

He has still had hits at Box office though like: MR Brooks, Rumour Has It, Man Of Steel, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, 3 days To Kill, So not fair to say that as he has recovered
