Woody Allen : Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
I thought Match Point was quite good. Try Paris At Midnight.NOW!
Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Definitely. Midnight in Paris was classic Woody Allen charm, and won him an academy award. Blue Jasmine was a superb, intense drama.
Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Blue Jasmine is terrific, for my money his best film since Bullets Over Broadway.
Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Blue Jasmine is by far my favob68urite Allen movie since Sweet and Lowdown. Midnight in Paris was okay. Didn't like Match Point. I think it's clear that he is much diminished since the 90s. Between 1969 and 1999 there's only two or three Allen films that I don't much care for out of something like 25 movies. Since 1999 there's only two or three I like and even those can't hold a candle to work like Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters, Crimes and Misdemeanors etc. He'll never make a film like those again, as much as I would love him to.
These are the only words I have, I'm stuck with them, stuck in them
Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
I don't know about "truly remarkable" - I think he hasn't made one of his masterpieces since the 90s personally. But I'd still take his last 10-15 years over almost any other director's in that time frame based on quan111ctity of very good to great work.
His most notable films in terms of critics and the public since 2000 are Match Point, Midnight in Paris and Blue Jasmine. Midnight in Paris was nominated for Best Picture and Blue Jasmine won Best Actress for Cate Blanchett.
Personally I have never agreed that much with how critics rank Allen films, so I don't necessarily agree. I see Midnight in Paris as one of his weakest films of all time and Blanchett is the main driving point behind Blue Jasmine's success. I think his last 3 films Cafe Society, Irrational Man, and Magic in the Moonlight is the biggest roll he's been on in a while

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
All of them.
Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
I don't believe there has ever been a good Woody Allen movie
Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
I don't think he's ever made a bad film. I like You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, Magic in the Moonlight and Blue Jasmine very much of his more recent films.

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
My first introduction to Woody Allen was "Scoop", which I loved. I really loved that whole "London Trilogy" back in the day, but Match Point is the most popular of that lot.
Since then I've seen nearly every Woody Allen movie. My favourite of the more recent ones is probably "Whatever Works". Of course I'm also a big Larry David fan. He is an ideal match to deliver Woody Allen's lines. :)
And of course Midnight in Paris, as people have mentioned, is a legitimately whimsical Woody Allen movie. And I too loved Everyone Says I Love You.
Besides those, Vicky Cristina Barcelona should also probably be mentioned, as a particularly good one.

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
I just watched Broadway Danny Rose for the first time. HILARIOUS! What a wonderful film! There is comedy and tragedy and drama, great stuff all around. Even some music, too. And Woody gave perhaps his finest performance in that film that I've ever seen from him.
Do any of the post-2000 films compare well to this one?

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Personally, and I have seen almost everything, nothing compares to BDR. It's one of the most perfect films ever. If you are anything like me, you will want to watch this one over and over.
Is Barney Dunn not one of the most tragic collateral damages ever? That scene in the hospital where Danny says he will pay Barney's medical bills, and Barney asks, "Are you sure YOU'RE feeling okay?" is one of those lines where you want to laugh hysterically and cry at the same time. And you are right; both Woody and Farrow (and Nick Apollo-Forte for that matter) give career performances.
And for some reason, "ripping the tongue out of the beard" cracks me up all the time.
Gordon Willis' best work ever, and for me, it has the greatest single shot in movie history (guess which one).
And on top of all, the greatest Thanksgiving film ever.

I agree. Broadway Danny Rose is a masterpiece.

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Perplexer, my guess for "greatest single shot" is probably Woody's reaction to hearing bad news at the end of the movie. I put it right next to Charlie Chaplin's final reaction in City Lights.
So many hilarious moments in the film. I thought the rope wriggling scene was a hoot, like Cary Grant's nightclub scene in Charades.

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Correct sir! That is, if you are talking about the long, static shot where Danny, Lou and Tina are walking down the hall towards the camera following Lou's triumphant night at the Waldorf. It starts out happily, with Danny giddy over Lou's successful show and his own romantically charged afternoon with Tina, but by the time Danny reaches the camera, in full closeup, he is stunned by the news he's being dumped really not by one, but two people. In 15-20 seconds we see a man go from being on top of the world to the depths of despair. An amazingly conceived shot, superbly acted.
Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Yes, that's the one. I was being vague in case some reader hadn't seen the film yet. Such a simply tracking shot, yet one of the most impressive scenes I've seen.
It just goes to show folks that we do NOT need big budgets and CGI effects to make a really good film.

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Broadway Danny Rose is classic Woody Allen, amongst his best. Very funny and with almost a sort of a rollicking, adventurous spirit in its plot direction. Again my favourite recent films are Whatever Works and Midnight in Paris. WW is his funniest recent film, I think, with maybe even a little pathos, but it's about a cantankerous old man, and the spirit of the film is very far removed from BDR. MIP has a more adventurous spirit, but it's almost more fantasy than comedy, and still, feels very different from BDR.
And then if you look at something like Vicky Cristina Barecelona, which is arguably the most representative of his recent period, it's obviously a very different style of film to what he was making in the 70s and 80s. His films are no less witty or enjoyable now, I still think almost all of them are worth watching, but no, I don't really think any his post-2000s ones can be compared fairly to Broadway Danny Rose.
Though I might also mention Woody's first three films of the 2000s: Small Time Crooks, Curse of the Jade Scorpion, and Hollywood Ending. They're not on the same level as BDR, and they don't have the degree of drama and tragedy I think you're asking about each has a sort of gimmicky premise, but each is executed delightfully, and they're similar in one way to BDR; being some of the last films in which Woody had the starring role, they all feature hilarious performances by him.

3. "Blue Jasmine"
4. "Cafe Society"
5. "The Curse of the Jade Scorpion"
6. "Irrational Man"
7. "Small Time Crooks"
8. "Match Point"
9. "Cassandras Dream"
10. "Magic in the Moonlight"
11. "Whatever Works"
12. "Scoop"
13. "Melinda and Melinda"

There's a difference between a differing opinion and a forced one.

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
I've never seen an Allen film I didn't like. Some are, of course, better than others, and I have my preferences.
But, yes, Match Point is an all-time great film, as you have noted.

Re: Any good recent Woody Allen movies?
Match Point is a brilliant film, one of Allen's best, and one of my all-time favourite movies.
Okay, that was 2005.
More recently, To Rome with Love was filled with great laughs, clever insights into humanity, and some really fun, intriguing characters. Magic in the Moonlight is sweet, and I really enjoyed Cafe Society.
I've never seen a work of Allen's I haven't liked, including the very underrated A Crisis in Six Scenes, his Amazon TV series that was worth a lot of laughs. Okay, Miley Cyrus was a miscast and he could've found better, but she didn't wreck it, and Woody and Elaine May are hilarious.

However, he makes films for a small audience, and frankly, none of his films ever seem to show up anywhere near where I live. The last Allen film I saw was Match Point, I think, and I found it to be forgettable. Not a bad film, just not particularly memorable. The last Allen film I really liked was Everyone Says I Love You, but I'm a sucker for feel-good musicals.
So, I'm just wondering if Woody Allen has created any truly remarkable films in the past 20 years, and if so, what are they so I can track them down? Thanks.
