Judy Garland : People still alive who knew Judy

Doris Day is gone now. And yes, Judy and Doris met when Judy was doing A STAR IS BORN.

Vic Damone has passed on.

Gena Rowlands said that working with Judy and Burt Lancaster was "interesting."

Kirk Douglas, Olivia de Havilland and Jane Powell have since passed on. Judy knew the first two to some degree, but she has more of a connection with Powell.

Jane Withers passed away last year and was a friend of Judy's.

Judy also knew Betty White. White called Judy "a good friend."

June Lockhart is still alive. She worked with Judy in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS. She had nice things to say about Judy as well.

Most of the children of Hollywood legends are still alive who knew Judy to some extent.

Cheryl Crane, daughter of Lana Turner, lived next door to Judy and Liza in the 1950s. She thought Judy was funny and modest as opposed to her mother who was too caught up with being a star. One day her and Liza decided to swap mothers because Judy allowed Liza to ride her bike on the street. The two mothers agreed and when Cheryl asked if she could ride her bike, Judy said “No.”

Darryl Hickman. Hickman does not share any scenes with Judy in MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS, but he did recall her as a person. He said she was very sweet.

Jimmy Bates. Jimmy was the little boy who appeared in the toy shop scene with Fred Astaire in EASTER PARADE. He shared no scenes with Judy but she did visit the set.

I don’t recall if Ava Astaire met Judy or if it was her brother, Fred Astaire Jr who appeared on the set.

I’ll put in a special word for Marsha Hunt. They both worked at MGM. Both appeared in THOUSANDS CHEER [1943] and both participated in the radio program HOLLYWOOD FIGHTS BACK.

I think Dick Van Dyke was one. He attended the very first taping of THE JUDY GARLAND SHOW in which his brother appeared in at the time.

We also just lost Carelton Carpenter in January. He appeared with Judy in SUMMER STOCK [1950]

John Edward Robinson is a serial killer currently in prison. An American, Robinson met Judy in England in 1957. She kissed him on the cheek and told him "Us Americans have to stick together."

Actor and one time murder suspect Andrew Prine also knew Judy. He would sometimes accompany Judy and Glenn Ford on social outings when Judy and Glenn were dating.

Andrew Prine put to bed the inaccuracies of the relationship between Judy and Glenn Ford.

Leslie Caron [91 today] also met Judy.

Lorna Smith, one of Judy's biographers died in 2020. I heard about her death only a few days ago.

Lois Reeves is still alive and knew Judy.

Warren Beatty also met Judy in the 1960s.

Priscilla Montgomery was one of the Munchkins in THE WIZARD OF OZ. She appears in a photo with Judy [among other Munchkins] and turned 93 a few days ago.

We just lost Angela Lansbury. She appeared opposite Judy in THE HARVEY GIRLS. They stayed friendly until Judy's passing in 1969. Lansbury had nice things to say about working with Judy.

Andrew Prine died on Halloween. He knew Judy socially in the 1960s. He contributed to Peter Ford's book on Glenn Ford. Prine had appeared with Ford in ADVANCE TO THE REAR [1964] Here's what he said about the relationship between Judy and Glenn:

"They had known each other for a long time, but now they were having this love affair. Glenn liked me right away, and I liked him. I was the young guy on the set in those days and Glenn took me under his wing. And through Glenn I met Judy. Judy loved me; she thought I was funny. And she was such a flirt. She saw us in that silly movie we did-She went to it with us. Glenn used to throw these wonderful parties, and I'd get to meet these wonderful people, Rex Harrison-scowling at me, looking as if he'd knock me flat if I said a word, which he would- and Oscar Levant, a crazy mother, and Edgar Buchanan. And I got to stay after everyone left, and Judy would keep the piano-player late, and she'd sing to Glenn and me. Moments I treasure. And we got together at other times. We went to Ciro's and the Crescendo and whatever else was still around of the old nightclubs. We would all dress up and go out, in those days when people still dressed up to go out. And I was with Glenn and Judy to watch her daughter Liza's first television special. And it was wonderful. They were a real couple. But it was brief. Judy had her problems. She was adorable. She was brighter than anybody. Lots of laughs. But she had her problems."
