Twin Peaks : How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

They both died in the original series. They can, of course, play their spirits, but this leaves the question of how their spirits now look noticeably older even though by most conventional wisdom, by most conventional storytelling, spirits don't age. Now, Lynch and Frost are not telling the most conventional story, but it still presents an interesting puzzle in how they've managed they put these two actors in there (credited as their original parts, too, not coming back as a relative like with Maddy) without making their audience say, "Hang on a minute!"

Thoughts/predictions on how they might achieve this?

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

I think Sheryl Lee will be playing another look alike relative of Laura Palmer as she did playing Maddy. And I'm sure she will play Laura in the Red Room and other elements such as dreams etc. Ray Wise has aged remarkably well and could still pull off playing Leland Palmers spirit or ghost or whatever element of that character.

One of the heartbreaks of not getting a season three on ABC 25 years ago was the info that came out afterwards that the writers/producers had laid out their plans for the following season and one of them was bringing Sheryl Lee back as a red headed long lost cousin of Laura's. I was so disappointed we never got to see that character. I think that was info coming from Harley Peyton years ago so I'm not sure that Mark Frost and David Lynch would include that now. (They also talked about the otherworldly beings Mike and Bob and LMFAP etc were all from a planet made of corn -garmonbozia - but I'm sure we won't be getting that either.)

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

Sheryl Lee is credited as playing Laura Palmer in the credits for Twin Peaks 2017, which casts some doubt on the idea that she'll come back as another relative. Of course, they could just be lying in the current credits, but it seems a little bit of an on the nose way to protect the casting information. Could have just not made any official casting public. Rumours will get out one way or another, but still.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

If its part of the narrative that David Lynch is so secretive about, he would not have allowed them to release information that would cripple the secrecy. So if she is (or anyone else) is playing another character that will be revealed as a surprise (like when Piper Laurie played the Japanese businessman in season 2) then it would not be listed on the cast listings that went out.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

In what list is she credited as playing Laura? IMDb? Pay no mind to anything on IMDb. It's not official. I'm sure she is playing Laura, but don't go by IMDb.

By not giving a damn, considering Lynch's 2014 precedent: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abHyTbOA0Oo

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

Have you even seen twin peaks?

Just because they are in the show doesn't mean that they are alive or that they play a big role in the new season.
I remember seeing Leland Palmer in the black lodge long after he died ,same with Maddy.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

Have you seen the video I linked?

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

There's been rumors going around in other forums that the 3rd season TP will be based on an 'alternate' universe different from TP Prime in Seasons 1 or 2.

In this alternate world, both Laura and Leland are still alive, presumably at a similar age of their respective case members, while another key character, perhaps Donna Hayward, is the one who was killed by 'Bob,' to explain why Laura Flynn Boyle, who has turned down replaying her character, is missing .

What kind of role other characters (esp. Coop) going to be in this 'alternate' world and how TP Prime and TP Alternate can be bridge together will of course be the topic of the upcoming season.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

Maybe the alternate Twin Peaks will be the one in Sarah Palmer's head. The Twin Peaks where her beloved husband and daughter were still living. Where Laura grew up and became a stable person of substance (not substance abuse), got married, and gave grandchildren to Sarah and Leland. And then, just as Sarah is lost in this joyful daydream - when she's really 'there' for just a moment, the room begins to flicker and a glassy-eyed Laura screams right in her face.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

I am familiar with that theorizing, yes! Personally, I don't believe a word of it, for one main reason: it would erase Laura's struggle, growth and eventual victory in FWWM.
But of course we'll see. I have no knowledge outside of what I read on the internet.

This theory only gets certifiably ridiculous when it gets lumped with an attempt to explain TSHOTP's canon divergences when TSHOTP states loud and clear on several occasions, including but not limited to its official blurb, that Laura is very much dead.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

That is a feature in the Blu-ray box set.

What's your point?

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

"Lynch already showed he doesn't give a damn about showing aged spirits", answering OP's question "how can they play spirits if they've aged".

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

Aged or aging? If we come to an aged spirit, they may always have looked that. If you see the spirit noticeably *aging*, that's a different story. The latter would be the case for Laura and Leland Palmer, and the other inhabitants of the Waiting Room/Black Lodge.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

Does anyone really care if the spirits in the Lodges have aged or not? We know very little about the Lodges, aging spirits would be par for the course and actually probably less weird than much of what we have already seen or will see in the new season.

There's been a lot of talk about alternative timelines in the new season. Lynch likes to play around with time and alternate realities a lot in his other works. While I wouldn't be completely opposed to this, I just hope that the ultimate end result is the "regular" timeline in which Laura died and everything that happened in Seasons 1 and 2 remains intact. Otherwise, i think that really lessens the impact of what's come before.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

I don't mind the concept of aging spirits. It would indeed be fitting with a Lynchian universe, but if they're just presented like they haven't changed, then that's a little bit insulting to the intelligence. I'm not saying that it needs to be straight up addressed; but it can be acknowledged in some way. If not, it could be a little worrying for the series overall. Why? Because if you're ignoring the fine details, you can mess up the big picture.

Of course, if alternate realities and so on come into play then anything could happen. Thing is, I would prefer for Lynch not to go too 'Inland Empire' with the whole thing. Twin Peaks is not a blank canvas to do an impressionist painting on, but an already established world. Personal opinion, but I feel like Lynch is at his best when he's working within the constraints of a traditional story and injecting his trademark elements into it, creating a warped world but one where you can still follow along and get a feeling of resolution.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

This is david lynch ,he won't be limited by logic nothing needs to be explained.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

Aging. My point is he's already showed us present-day, dead Laura and Leland and they look just like present-day Lee and Wise. We're not talking hypotheticals.
Of course one could argue that that was a featurette shot on a shoestring budget and the actual series might differ, but it's still right there in the blu ray set.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

t_constantijn,

i've had a few discussions with the laughing pineapple and he/she knows their stuff. The pineapple is not only well informed on the goings on of twin peaks, this pineapple that laughs is a true blue dedicated and devoted fan that deserves much more respect than the weak question of "have you even seen twin peaks?"

If i were to guess, the pineapple is laughing now at your brilliant epiphany.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?

For the 1 thousandsth TIME! This is the beginning of the sotry. We have already scene the end. This is the biginning. How meny TIMES am I going to have to explain this. TRUST DIANNE! SHE KNOWS ALL ABOUT IT. Poor Laura. 25 years. It will all be over in September. I'm going to have to get a television. I had a nightmare that a sexual predator became president of the USA. Killer Bob in the white house. I haven't seen the news in 5 years. What's happening in the world? If someone sez something bad about Dianne it only proves they're idiots. Blind idiots. Dianne Rocks. Here comes the nurse. i told her about my dream. she looked so scared. More than usual.

She has a kind of psychiatric cabaret. Very good. There was something about Suez.

Re: How can Laura and Leland Palmer be in the upcoming series?
