No, it's a classic phobia.
Look at the root of the words: homo (same) + phobia (fear), fear of the same. Heterosexual males are afraid and paranoid of being labelled homosexual. It's not that they're afraid of gay people. But the idea that another male might look at their butt and desire them, that sends shivers down their spine. Sorry, homophobia is a classic phobia in every sense of the word.

Being Gay isn’t tolerated among the black community, you get ostracized for doing so. The phobia behind it took off during the AIDS crisis in the 80’s when scores of people were rapidly dying and dying fast from it. Blacks who were more poor were at a greater risk and hence a “phobia” towards Gay people took shape.

Well I was trying to explain to God's panther that homophobia is a classic fear or "phobia" in psychiatric terms.
But I'm white and I can tell you that homophobia is just as prominent among whites even if the white middle class is more civilized about it. Most white heterosexuals will not vote for an openly gay man as congressman, let alone president.

It took me a great deal of time to think up a decent handle. It's not so much that I mind its use but prefer that it be done so in context. For example when speaking specifically of the past.
Imagine that you take a job flipping burgers while studying to be a lawyer. Years later while practicing law I'd assume that you'd prefer to be addresses treated and though of as a lawyer and not a fry cook.

It predates the AIDS crisis. It goes all of the way back to slavery when many black men were chained, whipped, and stripped of their masculinity.

The seeds were spread back then for sure, but until the AIDS crisis took off it’s not like the black community feared homosexuality. Once black men started dropping like flies a phobia took shape and still exists today, although not quite as prominent as medicine has vastly improved.

I'm wired a little different. If I were to contemplate such a fate I skip straight to rage and a strong desire to kill. Were anyone to ever do such a thing they would have to kill me or forever sleep with one eye open. Even if they kill me it is no guarantee. I have a father and brother who while not as hardcore as I certainly would not be inclined to just let it go.

I'm talking about what I've observed among straight males when they think another man is looking at them sexually. They usually see it as an affront to their dignity. Blacks are still stuck in old Democratic Party machine politics. They support old school Democrats like Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden. I doubt most blacks know who is Buttigieg or that he is gay. Tulsi Gabbard also polled low among blacks. New names don't appeal to black Democrats.
But black, whites, browns, Americans in general are not going to elect a gay president.

I live in a conservative Southwestern state, so it's not just black men who are homophobic around here.
We have the Latino machismo culture who hate gays, the white roughneck cowboy types who hate gays, and the hypermasculine black men who hate gays. So homophobia isn't exclusive to one group nor is it more prevalent in another.
Flaming queens in this neck of the woods are just as reviled and intolerable as the rest of the gays, as far these guys are concerned.

The bourgeois upper middle class blacks are similar to upper middle class whites when it comes to superficial displays of tolerance, especially towards homosexuals.
But outright blatant intolerance seems to be a more frequent occurrence within all racial categories, when you go further down the economic ladder.
Most black men view lesbians as either "one of the guys" or a potential sexual conquest that they can "turn straight". Unless of course, she's trying to go after his girl. Then she becomes that manly ass bulldagger (bulldyker).
