Paul Newman : Better than Brando
Re: Better than Brando
No doubt about it! 👍
You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.

Re: Better than Brando
Glad to see the interest is still there. I was shocked to find Newman's page gone. Are you one of the old posters from IMDb? You seem familiar to me.
Re: Better than Brando
Paul Newman was one of the very best. He happens to be my all time favorite actor.
I'd like to see more interest here. There are a few others here who enjoy older films and the greats who starred in them. It was a nice surprise to see your posts this morning. Imagine that! Someone here on Filmboards wants to discuss actors and films!
All of the film boards from IMDB are here. I'm afraid that the boards for actors aren't all here. We can still discuss though.
To answer your question, yes. I did post on IMDb since 2005, I believe.

Re: Better than Brando
One of my faves too and a class act. Newman only improved with age.
I think I remember you. I was around from 2005-2016. I found out about this yesterday. Brought some tears seeing some of the old memories again.

Re: Better than Brando
Well, I hope you will stick around. It can be a bit rough around the edges here, but there are many of s who know our older movies and the actors who starred in them. We like discussing them.

I'll stick around. I'm often found on individual boards like Paul Newman, James Mason, Judy Garland and others.
Glad there is a familiar face still hanging around. I'll always be lurking somewhere.

McQueen was always interesting.
I especially like his TV appearances.
I still like watching him each morning in Wanted Dead or Alive on the Heroes and Icons channel.
Did you ever see him and his wife in the Alfred Hitchcock Presents episode? The Man From the South.

Terrific actor and a real humanitarian as well.
Yes, this is really me.

Re: Better than Brando
Yep. Not only was Newman a handsome movie star and brilliant actor, but he was also a generous man.
Re: Better than Brando
Stallone has them both beat for sure.

Re: Better than Brando
Newman was more consistent with his movie career and you never got the sense that he phoned in a performance. He actually tried really hard to get out of the sex symbol image. I find Newman more charismatic and likable.
Brando was a mixed bag. He could do no wrong in the 1950s, but then became lazy. His career was a mixed bag after the 1960s. He made a lot of really great films, but there was a sense of a waste of talent.

Re: Better than Brando
I'm surprised that Newman is not often compared to Brando. Many focus on comparing Brando to Montgomery Clift or James Dean, but not Newman despite his superstar status. Newman's screen persona is closer to that of Brando than the other two.
Re: Better than Brando
I find Paul Newman to be pretty boring. I know I am in the minority. He's got some charisma and he is handsome, but I just don't respond to him. The only performance of his that impressed me was "Hud". But Patricia Neal was the one who really grabbed my attention in that one. He was also pretty good in "Slap Shot".
For me, Newman lacks intensity.

Re: Better than Brando
I agree! I don't even think he is the best thing about his acclaimed performance in Lumet's The Verdict.
He was too much of a charismatic personality and his role in Hud does give him some different layers and he was likeable, yet at the same time couldn't really love back those that loved him. I really enjoyed that film and the acting was top notch.
Slap Shot was black comedy and enjoyable too. The real scene stealer in that one though is Melinda Dillon. A 5 minute sequence completely topless and she was just as real and as natural as day.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?
