Thorne would actually resembles MJ's comic counterpart quite well with a simple change in hairstyle while Basso is just another homely, unremarkable ginger with a goofy smile. We already had that in the Sam Raimi films and there's no reason to have it again. You might think you have good taste but so do coprophiliacs. Hell, Amanda Righetti would be a more suitable choice and not only is she way too damn old but she's already appeared in the MCU.

If they really can't find anyone else, then the most logical choice would be Bella Thorne or Zendaya.

Hailee Steinfeld and Odeya Rush might work but dying their hair is a prerequisite. Otherwise it's like a rainbow-striped Hulk or a tweaker Tony Stark with a mullet and a suit visibly made from scraps of a Pinto Cruising Wagon. Some aspects of certain characters are too iconic for tampering.

Between those 2 that you mentioned, I would go with the girl that has had a little more experience in her track record, and that would be Hailee Steinfeld. If you haven't seen The Edge of Seventeen, i reccommend it. She was great in the coming-of-age movie and I feel like people would recognize her more since she has also been in Pitch Perfect 2 and who doesn't love that franchise amirite? The red hair is a must like you said. All they have to do is dye it. I wouldn't mind seeing a more dark orange color for Hailee instead of basic red.

Red hair, while crucial to the part, isn't the only factor. MJ needs to look like a supermodel, the kind of girl that turns every head in the room. Basso doesn't have that potential. I don't want another Kirsten Dunst situation.

Bella Thorne would be a horrible horrible choice! She is so one dimensional. She only plays the stuck up or bratty girl in school. I don't think she has the acting chops to pull MJ off. Zendaya has the opportunity to play MJ really well in this film if she does end up becoming her and why not? She is so pretty, especially in the rain. Saw some pics of her with Tom Holland and she was gorgeous with her wet hair and no make up on.
