Sinister : why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
Maybe he didn't want to keep his family awake since he was working late at night.
But I see your point.

Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
But then again, if him shouting on multiple occasions and falling through the attic (that one did wake up his wife,) didn't wake up his family, I'm not sure why a couple lights turned on would?
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
That's what I was thinking the whole time. I just assumed he didn't want to wake them.
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
Are there no doors to shut?
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
And after watching this again, I see that there are lights on. Check out the scene where Trevor pops out of the box. The ceiling hall light is on. There is a table lamp on. But the lights don't cast a lot of light. They glow, but they don't illuminate. As a result you see a lot of shadow and light directed on a small area.
What a creepy cool effect! So subtle you don't catch on at first. Very well done by the director and the lighting technicians.

Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
Great description. However, that is how most horror films are lighted.
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
yeah-this walking around the house, or into a dark room with the lights out when you hear strange noises is getting old
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
It was so frustrating that he crept about and never turned on the lights that it bumped me right out of the movie. He never wakes his wife to alert her. Rarely checks on his kids. He runs out of the house leaving the door wide open. I mean, he's a monster's dream father.
Why oh why can't a horror film be made where people actually behave the way most of us would in similar circumstances? The only realistic bit was when he decided it's time to move out (which proved to be his downfall, but still.)
THE only real scare was when the face on the computer screen moves and looks at him. That made me sit up and take notice!! But other than that we were yelling 'turn on your bloody lights' most of the time.
Over the course of a year we swallow 4 spiders in our sleep

Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
AMEN!! I came here just to verify that I'm not crazy since the movie got such good reviews. The main character is just dumb. Pretty much everything he does in the movie is just outright illogical and unrealistic and utterly distracting in the obtuseness of the behavior.
TURN ON THE #$#$ LIGHTS!!
TURN ON THE #$#$ LIGHTS!!
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
yeah its such a cliche to use a dark room to heighten tension-cheap

Can we please put an end to this urban legend? I'm tired of having to spend my life under a mosquito net.
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
Yep this was just one of the several reasons that, unfortunately, I didn't like the movie as much I thought that I would! seeing all those 10 star ratings and some reviews about being this the best horror movie of decade?! well, it certainly wasn't like that (at least to me)
It wasn't as much scary as some like Insidious 1 & 2, The Conjuring, The Cabin In The Woods and, even, The Last Exorcism, methinks.
Not saying it was a bad movie or giving it a 1 or 2 out of ten stars rating when you don't like one little element in a film like some other folks sometimes do but it could've been much much better in my opinion.

Well, can't really say any movie can scare me these days! at least when I'm not an 8 year old kid anymore after living sweet & filthy these nearly thirty years after, now!
So, when I say that this>A movie was not as scary as that>B, IMO I probably mean that I enjoyed the B one having some better horror elements and scary mood rather than the A, according to my very taste, or even my state, at time!
At last and most, it's just an opinion and shouldn't bother any A'er, C'er or B'er, or, any, IMDb'er! hehe
And, a very last and final line to my horror-fan friend(s) I give 5/5 to Sinister and about 5/7 or 5/8 out of 10 to Cabin In The Woods, and 5/6 to The Last Exorcism, 6/5 to The Conjuring, 6/6 to Insidious and 6/9 to Dark Skies
and all of it shows that how much I enjoyed of each as a horror (scary) picture and it doesn't mean how much they scared the hellalujah out of me!
It's just one single opinion that all of those countless 10 star ratings could make it count nothing! and there's thousands of The Conjuring's fans now who probably are laughing out loud after reading these personal humble lines and you do guess that exactly who's happier of making his fellows that much thrilled and happy!

Wtf? Dude, your numbers are kinda off
Sigs suck, and so do people who use them.
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
Hahaha
Why doesn't anyone in horror movies ever use lights?? I'm always thinking, flip a damn switch already! I guess it wouldn't be as freaky with the lights onsame reason horror films primarily get creepiest by nightfall.

It's especially difficult if you're watching on a TV that has a fading tube.

Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
Every time he did that (many times!) it took me out of the movie. If you think there's something in your house, you turn on all the lights! Even more aggravating when he kept walking past light switches.
The only time he had an excuse was when the power went out.

Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
I didn't even realize that the power had gone out until they mentioned it. I don't know how he was aware of it either considering he didn't attempt to turn on any other light.
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
At the beginning when it was so dark I got really annoyed. The next morning, in the movie, they mentioned the power went out so I thought OK, fair enough. Then the rest of the movie I kept thinking 'the electric company has still not fixed the power?' Really took me out of the movie which had a decent enough back story but no friggin' lights!

Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
THIS! This is what drove me crazy about this movie.so much so that it was distracting and took me out of it. There were more than a few scenes where you couldn't see anything other than his flashlight. I couldn't be scared while not being able to see anything. Even when lights were on, it was too dark. I realize what they were attempting to do with mood, but, it just didn't work for me. It annoyed me rather than scared me, walking through your house with a baseball bat while not being able to see anything is absurd. Don't even get me started on the scene where he takes his kid having the night terror out front, half naked, into the cold. My husband was like "Why in the hell are they outside?" to which I said "Apparently the porch light is the only light that works"
Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
I just decided that he couldn't afford to pay the electricity bill on top of his two mortgages and one takeaway dinner.
But seriously, it was a little bit distracting at times.

Re: why doesnt ellison ever use lights?
That is my #1 criticism of this awful film. It is so dark, you can't tell what's going on.
