Dead of Night : DVD RELEASE

DVD RELEASE

For those of you out there whose are trying to track down a copy of this superb film, the wait is over. It is now available on DVD here in the UK, not sure if it is available in the United States or Canada. However for our friends across the pond, who have a region free DVD player, try the following Websites. Play.com , Amazon or HMV. Hope this has been some help to you.

Re: DVD RELEASE

John (or anyone else who has bought this new DVD release) -- Could you tell me what the sound quality is like? I already own the "Dead of Night"/"Queen of Spades" DVD, and the picture quality on that one is decent enough, but the sound quality on "Dead of Night" is pretty bad. If the sound on this new DVD is a significant improvement over that, I'd consider buying it also. (I live in the U.S., but have an all-region player.) Any opinions are much appreciated. Thanks!

Re: DVD RELEASE

Hi Peter, the sound quality on the UK DVD is very good, it's a standard mono soundtrack, but sounds awesome played through a Home Cinema System. The picture quality for a Black and White movie over 60 years old is sharp, with good contrast. There are a few small blemishes, but i'm more than happy with this DVD. This is not a remastered Disc, but i would recommend it. If you try PLAY.COM then click on International on the home page, it should link you to UK sales, this is a good and trusted website, i buy all my US discs from them. You could also try www.optimumreleasing.com for further information. Hope i have been of some assistance to you, hope you manage to track down a copy. Cheers !

Re: DVD RELEASE

Thanks very much for the information on the sound and picture quality, John -- that's what I was hoping to hear. I will definitely go ahead and order this one. (I've found in the past that bensonsworld.co.uk seems to be the cheapest for ordering from the U.S., so will probably go with them.)

Re: DVD RELEASE

It is also available from Amazon.co.uk I get all my DVDs from there

Re: DVD RELEASE (sound quality) *very mild spoilers*

I've just found a review of the UK Optimum Releasing Region 2 DVD on another forum posted only a week ago!

"I watched the Optimum release last night.

It's somewhat pointless and redundant to say that this is an amazing film - we all know it, or of it. There's not a moment of it that could be changed without hurting it somehow, just stupendous.

The story with the Ventriloquist gets most mentions, and deservably so. However, let's not forget that the film has a wonderful framing device, and toher stories of merit - such as the one with the mirror, and the bus. I also appreciated there taking time out for some good old fashioned humor with the golfers story. Just great all round.

And yes, the R2 DVD just isn't that great. There are a few minutes, around about the 13-16 minute mark, when the quality takes a nose dive into the PD domain - I guess that's a reel change? But after a couple minutes it recovers, and while it won't win any rewards, it is certainly watchable after that.

The main problem with it is the sound, it's quite thin and "tinny", and could have been worked on one imagines.

But for such a glorious film, don't let it stop you grabbing it. It's such a joy to watch, love this film!"

Now, I already own the US Anchor Bay "Dead Of Night"/"Queen Of Spades" double set, so now I'm wondering... is the sound quality just the same for the US and UK DVD's of "DoN" ? No problem playing the Optimum, I'm in the UK!. I'm only on two-channel sound, but if anyone with both discs could tell me (it wouldn't be the first time I've bought more than one copy of a film, because my second was of better quality or had [more] extras)...Thank you in anticipation!

Re: DVD RELEASE (sound quality) *very mild spoilers*

Heathen, I don't claim to have an expert ear, but I'd have to say that I didn't find any significant improvement in the sound quality of the Optimum DVD over the "Dead of Night"/"Queen of Spades" double set. However, I did find the picture quality somewhat better on the Optimum release -- darker blacks, that sort of thing. So I'm not unhappy I bought it, although I was hoping for better sound. Of course, someone else might have a different opinion.

Re: DVD RELEASE (sound quality) *very mild spoilers*

I too was not happy with the sound quality on this DVD - it was a bit muddy. I assume with some old films it's just really difficult to improve sound if the original source isn't up to par in the first place. This is an Anchor Bay release too and they are generally known for putting out the best quality product they can.
