I Love Lucy : What About Little Ricky
Re: What About Little Ricky
Yea I agree that's pretty weird. I just watched that one the other day and was thinking the exact same thing.
Re: What About Little Ricky
Their elderly neighbor, Mrs. Trumble, often provided free baby-sitting.
Re: What About Little Ricky
Obviously Little Ricky went to Mrs. Trumble in that circumstance. I doubt Fred would have been able to look after him by himself.
Re: What About Little Ricky
Just finished watching "Lucy Writes a Novel." I've seen this episode many times before, but tonight it struck me for the first time that there is absolutely NO mention of Little Ricky at all! They don't even say that he is with Mrs. Trumble, which was the excuse they normally used. Instead, the entire episode plays out as though he didn't exist. In one scene, we see Ricky waking up in the morning and coming into the living room where Lucy is sitting. She'd been up all night typing her novel and Ricky says that it's 9:30 in the morning. But no mention of their baby. I guess he was on vacation that week lol!
Re: What About Little Ricky
Yeah, I agree totally! When Lucy became an author, she forgot she was a mother!
I've mentioned one of the scenes in that episode before. Lucy and Ricky race to the basement to retrieve the copies of Lucy's novel before Fred burns the trash. There is NO mention made of little Ricky. Presumably he is in his crib and they figure he's safe for the time being. LOL
Then they are all in the basement piecing together the torn pages of Lucy's manuscript. Hopefully in the meantime someone went upstairs and asked Mrs. Trumbull to sit with the baby.
I did feel sorry for the writers having to fgure out a way of putting the baby somehwere. The show was about two adult couples, not a couple with a baby. When the Arnazes had a baby in real life, they threw a monkey wrench into the premise for the show. Lucy was written as a screwball character, not a screwball mother. Just like The Honeymooners, the show had no need for kiddies, but the writers had to find some way to shoehorn a baby into the episodes or at least mention WHERE he was!

Re: What About Little Ricky
One of the things I loved best about the Bob Newhart show was that Bob & Emily did not have kids. It was an adult show. I dont see how Little Ricky added anything, we really could have done without him. I'm glad that Lucy and R Icky had a son, but when he was not needed, it was pretty noticeable. Love how TV kids are always sent to their room to play

Re: What About Little Ricky
Some shows do better than others with kids . Some of the current shows actually do pretty good.
Bewitched had the advantage of having Samantha's family that could just pop in to babysit. The would show Tabitha just enough.
The Andy Griffith Show did well with working Opie into the show in a seamless way.
The Love Lucy format seldom worked well to have children around but there were a few episodes I thought it was less awkward.

Re: What About Little Ricky
I honestly never think of Little Ricky during his infancy episodes. But Richard Keith was a cute kid with amazing drum talent so I enjoyed watching him.
Re: What About Little Ricky
Now that you bring him up. I wonder what he ended up doing in 2017. To bad there was never an attempted revival with him.
