Rectify : So many great shows on television right now…
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
It's truly amazing, and I'd say it's the only series currently airing that I'd put up there with the all-time greats Deadwood, Mad Men, The Sopranos, The Wire, etc Rectify is just that good. I mean, The Americans and Better Call Saul and Mr. Robot are excellent, for instance, but Rectify is something else. And this latest episode only reinforced that. Its brand of utterly genuine and rare humanism is beautiful to behold.
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
I think that what makes it stand out above all the standard criteria for excellence is that it just doesn't feel like TV. It's like it's inventing its own special medium.
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
Yeah, in a way I agree. It's hard to think of other shows that it really resembles. I mean, there are touchstones it has a little of the tone of the later seasons of Six Feet Under and the realistic day-to-day pacing of David Milch's HBO series (with which it shares its glorious humanism). But on the whole, there isn't anything else quite like it. The closest reference point would probably be in film, to the output of Terrence Malick but this resemblance is mostly confined to the first season or two, and not terribly great either.
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
Yep - Six Feet Under is its close cousin and it even shares superficial plot and character points with it.
I find that Masters of Sex has occasional moments that reach Rectify's level of pathos, depth and melancholy. Which is why I find Caitlin's Fitzgerald's guest role here so wonderfully meta

Agreed. But don't forget Fargo.
Time flies like an arrow. Fruit flies like a banana.

Re: So many great shows on television right now…
Yes! I've only seen the 1st season of Fargo, and it was a standalone masterpiece. It reminded me of the novel The Master and Margarita, because I interpreted Thornton's character as being a devil-like metaphysical creature.

I highly recommend the second season of Fargo. I was afraid it would not hold up but I think its even better than the first.
BTW, one of the posters here mentioned The Leftovers, and I have to agree.
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
Funny you should say that, Just last night I started re-watching Fargo. I had forgotten just how good it was.
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
In love with Caitlin F. on MoS so seeing her here was a wonderful surprise:)
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
Infortunately, so far she acts exactly like Libby. Not good news in regard to her range.
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
I absolutely love this series. The slow, meticulous analysis of the characters, their painful interaction, their masks and sometimes brutal honesty, their insights.
When Daniel explained to Avery what 19 years on death row had done with him, I was on the verge of tears, and kept thinking, 'Daniel, you oughta write about this.'

Re: So many great shows on television right now…
You do realize that Daniel is a fictional character and Charles Manson is a real life murderer, right? Just checking
Re: So many great shows on television right now…
Thank you. The crazy seems to have spread all over the place.
For all we know, Daniel has not raped Hannah, and chances are that he has not killed her either. Charles Manson, on the other hand.

Re: So many great shows on television right now…
I think the writing on this show is simply wonderful. Daniel is such a complicated character. I can't help but find myself sympathizing with him and his entire family.
But seriously, I'm pretty sure that sign_in_1234 does NOT agree with this analysis.

Re: So many great shows on television right now…
lookz like smarty pants ain't so smart.
Thanks. You've answered my question from the other thread. You obviously are about 15 years old.
And just so you know, Charles Manson IS technically a murderer. In the legal sense. And the moral sense. And in every other sense. You do realize that right?
And once again: Real person versus fictional character. That seems like the most important issue in this particular discussion.

Re: So many great shows on television right now…
he's still alive, and still in, right?
Certainly last time I saw the guy, he was not showing many signs of snapping out of it and mellowing.
