Music General : Underrated or forgotten guitarists

Underrated or forgotten guitarists

For starters, I'll pick Terry Kath from Chicago. What a waste he died so stupidly in 1978.

Here's a live clip of MAKE ME SMILE from 1970. The entire tune is great, but his solo at 2:35 highlights his brilliance on guitar.

This is just a great live clip of a great band. Infusing jazz and rock in a spectacular fashion.

Who do you think is underrated or forgotten when it comes to guitar?

Re: Underrated or forgotten guitarists

Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth)
Chris Stein (Blondie)
James Iha (Smashing Pumpkins)
Vernon Reid (Living Colour)

Re: Underrated or forgotten guitarists

I actually like sonic Youth but I've never understood the praise they get for their guitar work. Sure it's "original" but it's not at all what i think of when I think of great guitar playing.

Re: Underrated or forgotten guitarists

Carlos Alomar - Responsible for most of Bowie's most recognizable post-Spiders guitar riffs.

Phil Manzanera - Really don't know why this guitar hasn't even become an "alternative" guitar hero. Added some very tasteful guitar parts to melodically challenging songs and had an unmistakable searing tone.

Talk about forgotten, Glen Campbell, who's career is now over due to the onset of Alzheimer's, is a name almost EVERYONE (30's or older) knows, but sadly, is one that RARELY is mentioned when a discussion like this comes up.

Simply put, he was INCREDBIBLE..and to anyone who may doubt it, or simply not be familiar with his work, you might want to look him up. You will NOT be disappointed !!!

Re: Underrated or forgotten guitarists

I was thinking about mentioning CampbellI'm a big fan, but he's a good example with these kinds of threads where I find myself wondering if he isn't too famous/too well-known to list. Even some of the people I listed I thought were probably too well-known . . . although on the flipside, if you start mentioning a bunch of completely obscure guitarists, people who haven't even recorded much, etc., then folks just ignore it. It's hard to find a good balance.

Re: Underrated or forgotten guitarists

Maybell Carter is virtually unknown outside of "roots" music, but her influence on rock and pop guitar is huge.

Gary Richrath - one, if not the biggest (along with Terry Kath) underrated guitarist. Just because REO went more sappy didn't mean Gary set the guitar down. He still laid down some great solos during that period.
