Re: Artists who left a successful solo career to join a group?
That's actually a very interesting question. I can't think of any.

Richie Kotzen had established a solo career before joining Poison. So did Blues Saraceno.
Re: Artists who left a successful solo career to join a group?
Bowie did with Tin Machine.
Re: Artists who left a successful solo career to join a group?
I can't believe I didn't think of that. Bowie had been huge as a solo artist. He joined Tin Machine to make the music he wanted to make. And it was marginally successful at best. I saw Bowie at Giants Stadium in 1987. He played theaters with Tin Machine.
Re: Artists who left a successful solo career to join a group?
"Successful" being relative , I was thinking of Gowan and Styx
although, both acts joined force way beyond their popularity peak.
Maybe Adam Lambert and Queen, but I don't think they have released original material yet.

Do the Travelling Wilburys count?
Re: Artists who left a successful solo career to join a group?
I love the Wilburys. But they were a super group, not a group.
Re: Artists who left a successful solo career to join a group?
Probably shouldn't count, because he didn't really leave his solo careerthey were concurrent, but Todd Rundgren with Utopia. Especially the later 70s/80s version of Utopia Todd wanted to be a democratic band.
Bruce Hornsby with the Grateful Dead
Chick Corea with Return to Forever, as well as Wayne Shorter with Weather Report
Paul McCartney with Wings, although it's arguable just how much of a band they were at times
Robert Palmer with Power Station

Wasn't Todd Rundgren successful with Nazz before starting his solo career?
I considered Wings a backup band. And their only constants were Denny Laine and Linda McCartney.
The Power Station were a super group, not a group.

They were moderately successful, yeah, but why would that matter? You gave Sammy Hagar as an example. He was in Montrose before his solo career.
Re Wings, right, and I'd agree, though most people argue that they were a group. Also, I don't know why it would matter if line-ups aren't consistent.

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham
Agneta and Anni-Frid pre ABBA

Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham
Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham were a duo before joining Fleetwood Mac. They weren't a solo act. And their "Buckingham Nicks" album was not successful.
I am trying to think of successful duos who joined a group. That is a tough one. Flo & Eddie joined The Mothers of Invention. But they had been in The Turtles before that.

Re: Artists who left a successful solo career to join a group?
Whilst not strictly speaking a solo artist he was a successful session musician; Jimmy Page.
He made enough off the back of recording with the likes of The Kinks, The Who, Van Morrison and the like prior to joining the Yardbirds and then using the cash he'd made to self finance the first Led Zeppelin record.
Where is everybody?

Re: Artists who left a successful solo career to join a group?
Does Nico count? She wasn't exactly "successful", but she did try to launch hersef with a little help from the Stones' old manager, but the Velvet Underground did add an "and" during her tenure with them.
