I agree with all the melancholy feelings you have for this movie, but I have no idea if the movie is creating them in me or if it's just that it was made in a better America (1964) . . . an America that is never coming back.

There is a lot of truth in your post. There is something nice about watching a good guy survive in a place where survival is not likely. It is nice to watch him figure things out as he goes along, find a friend (Mona), find a purpose (the escaping slave), and eventually survive against all odds.
I too have enjoyed it the more I have watched it. It often acts as background fodder for the kids and I as we go about our day.
I am too young to relate to the days of "a better America", but I can see how the calm and sophisticated pacing and feel of this film could instill a sense of nostalgia.
