Lost in Space : Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
Ther is no explanation. So you just have to use your imagination and make something up.
Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
I did and I went someplace dark.
The first mission and first family made it 1/4 the way to Alpha Centauri and were attacked by aliens, and this is how Earth knows of aliens. They sent the ship back to Earth with the burned corpses of the family onboard.

Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
According to a set of Blueprints of the ship the Jupiter one was to go to the moon of Titan
In the Innovation Comics Series the Jupiter One blew up on the launch pad
sabatoge by his fiancee was on boerd
Also in the same comic series a Spaceship ala Roswell crashed bn Earth in a populated area so it was not secret reverse engineer it and you got the Jupiter series

Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
Oh wow the comics sound good. Whose fiancee?
I always thought it was fun to make up your own stories as to what happened to previous missions. I liked my idea as it seemed dark and Earth poor Earth just was never prepared.

Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
The name was also an in-joke. In Irwin Allen's earlier movie FIVE WEEKS IN A BALOON, the balloon was called the Jupiter One.
Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
That's an interesting fact.
Irwin Allen was also a huge cheapskate.
A lot of Lost In Space props found their way into other movies he made like The Towering Inferno and When Time Ran Out. In Tower a lot of LIS computer banks were used as the building control systems.

Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
Everybody's a cheapskate in Hollywood! Not to mention the Theatre.
Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
It was originally called the "Gemini 12" in the pilot episode, "No Place to Hide."
NASA's Project Gemini flew from April 1964 to November 1966. At some point someone must have realized that the ship needed a different name in the series, especially since the last Gemini flight actually turned out to be named "Gemini XII."
As for why the Jupiter II and not the Jupiter I, in addition to the craft in Five Weeks in a Balloon being named "The Jupiter," the writers were probably aware that the initial flights in NASA's manned programs had all been unmanned tests.
Mercury-Redstone 1, 1A, 2 and BD were unmanned tests. Mercury-Redstone 1 blew up on the pad and MR-2 carried the chimp named "HAM." Alan Shepherd flew in MR-3, aka "Freedom 7"
Likewise, Gemini 1 & 2 were unmanned tests, but Gemini 3 carried Gus Grissom and John Young. Gemini 3 was nicknamed "(The Unsinkable) "Molly Brown" in a reference to the accidental sinking of Grissom's earlier craft, "Liberty Bell" (MR-4).
Making the first manned flight aboard the "Jupiter 2" instead of the "Jupiter 1" may have been an attempt at "realism."
It's also kind of interesting that the "Jupiter II" had no nickname, since all of NASA's manned craft to that point had been given one.

Re: Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
Probably because of an unfortunate encounter the Jupiter 1 had with an asteroid or something.
Why is the ship called the Jupiter 2?
What was the Jupiter 1?
