Jodorowsky's Dune : Other tragically unfinished movies
Re: Other tragically unfinished movies
Bakshis animated version of "Lord of the rings". Though the first movie was a flop and Jacksons version is better, I think it was good enough for its time and I would have liked it to end properly.
Hyperbole.
Tragic? Did anybody die?

Re: Hyperbole.
If the Mona Lisa burns to ash and no one dies it's tragic. Not sure what you're implying.
Re: Hyperbole.
The Concise Oxford Dictionary does offer a second definition of tragedy, "Sad event, calamity, serious accident or crime". However, the first definition "Drama with unhappy ending" is what I think of when I hear (or see) the word tragedy and all the tragedies I am familiar with end in someone's death. So when I hear of the death of a child in a car accident (for example) I think it's a tragedy but the burning to ashes of La Gioconda I would not. It is hyperbole to consider an unmade film a tragedy.

Re: Hyperbole.
Your semantics are strong, and I am one to side with actual definitions, so I will concede your point with admiration.
I propose that it is disheartening that potential works of beauty will never come to fruition.

Re: Hyperbole.
As so many posts and threads on IMDb seem to consist of nothing but abuse and invective it is refreshing to have a civilized discussion on any topic.
I own a book that showcases the artwork of Chris Foss, 21st Century Foss (1978), it has a foreword by Alejandro Jodorowsky which begins "Dune had to be made". For years I waited in vain to see these images on the Big Screen and although not tragic I agree it is disheartening.

Re: Other tragically unfinished movies
I remember hearing or reading about an unfinished movie with Marlon Brando, that sounded very intriguing to me. But for the life of me, I cannot remember what it was. The page below lists many unfinished movie projects, some of them involve Brando, but I don't recognize the one I had in mind.

Hitchcock's Kaleidoscope was always another one that intrigued me.

Sergio Leone's Leningrad project. He had a lot of projects he wanted to realize, but he never got the chance to do it, because he died too early. Here are some of his never made movies: http://www.imdb.com/list/ls072480989/
Other tragically unfinished movies
I also was reminded of Stanley Kubrick's Napoleon movie, which I think should go down as the greatest movie that was never made: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanley_Kubrick%27s_unrealized_projects#N apoleon
I could also count Welles's Magnificent Ambersons, which was made, then tragically edited by the studio, with the original presumably lost.
Any other great films that were never made?
