Wake in Fright : Donald Pleasence

Donald Pleasence

Donald Pleasance steals the show in this film. What a wonderful character actor who is sorely missed in the film world. I've read the book and I can't imagine anybody else playing the role of Doc, truly amazing stuff...

Re: Donald Pleasence

Positively stunning performance. A true show-stopper.

Re: Donald Pleasence

I watched this for the first time a few nights ago. It was one of those things you appreciate more upon reflection instead of in the moment—at least for me it was. Pleasence's performance was terrific!

Re: Donald Pleasence

There is something subtly menacing - something I cannot quite pinpoint - about his performance here.

His acting manifests itself and bursts out in ways I never fully comprehended; his motivations were as fuzzy at the end as they were in the beginning. It's a great performance that truly lingers in the mind.

The next sentence is true. The previous sentence is false.

Re: Donald Pleasence

He was a brilliant actor when given a good part, wasn't he? Most people know him from B horror movies (not that he was bad in those, but he really couldn't make the most of his talents in those parts).

Re: Donald Pleasence

Yes he does. Just saw this movie. There is a moment after their first hunt, where they're sitting on the porch of some bar, and one of the yobs calls for "Four beers and four double whiskeys!" And Pleasance is leaning over a rail looking off in the distance, and when he hears the bit about "double whiskeys, he sort of looks back over his shoulder, not making eye contact with anyone- but we already know that he's explained to the main character that he's a drunk and he tries very hard to stick to beer. But when he looks over his shoulder… that small gesture lets us know he will succumb and it will get ugly, and it lets us know that he knows it too. Fine work. Also his very first scene in the restaurant when he meets the main character had me hypnotized. What an actor. Fine movie too.
