Sound people, advice on speakers…

2 x 100watt behringer studio monitors.
Anyone know if I'll need an AV reciever to connect these to my PC, or an amp or amything, I'm not down with the technicals...

I'll be using them solely for listening to Drum and Bass and Dub style music.

Will these suffice at producing the sub level bass, or will I need to get a seperate subwoofer aswell?

Re: Sound people, advice on speakers…

You will need at the very least, a stereo amplifier to go between the comp and speakers. An AVR would be better because you are going to need a subwoofer.

For deep bass, yes, you will need a subwoofer, these won't handle room shaking bass.

Re: Sound people, advice on speakers…

So if I get myself an AV reciever and a sub, I should be set?
Considering these are 100w a piece speakers, what wattage sub would you reccomend?
I've spied a 100w sub for about $25 from a pawn shop type place.... would this be good enough?/ too much compared to the speakers themselves?

Re: Sound people, advice on speakers…

You don't rate the watts of a sub based on the other speakers.
plus that rating only is a guideline for what they can take, not what you will give them. (which mostly will be 1-5 watts, maybe 10)
but a sub, bass needs more, thats why most subwoofers have their own built in amp, rated at least 300 to 600.
because the sub will suck way more amps than a receiver (AV) can give them while trying to power all speakers at once.
When buying a sub speaker size is more inportant. 8 is not a real sub, 10 is ok, and 12+.
and don't worry about a powered sub being too much as long as it has a gain knob on it you can adjust it.

Re: Sound people, advice on speakers…

Yes. But remember most home theater in a box systems, the wattage ratings are bullshiat.

Start with something like this, connected to the speakers that you were looking at. The receiver is 45 watts, but has a high quality amplifier. You can also tell the receiver whether you have a sub connected or not.

The other poster had a point, BUT, it really depends on what you are trying to do.

If you are only doing computer stuff and music, and not a whole lot of movies, then 10 or 12 inch self powered, 100-200 watt would be fine.

Such as this

Just adjust the frequency of the sub to the dropoff frequency of the main speakers. In this case, 60 hz. You set the level of the level of the sub to take over at 60 hz.

Re: Sound people, advice on speakers…

If you want it for PC use, look at the Behringer speakers with the built in amps. They will cost just a little more, then all you will need is a sub. Go to Musician's Friend.com look under powered monitors. Find a couple pair you like then search ebay & web for better prices.
