Garth Davis on Roons

I think Rooney is just an extraordinary actress. Shes like the Mona Lisa for me. A lot of people go, Oh, shes cold, but I actually think its quite the opposite. I think she is a deeply special human and shes got a great humanity. I just didnt find any of those stereotypes that people label her with. I actually found her very generous. I thought that she brought great life to the film. She just held the mystery of the story in such a way that it wasnt sentimental or cheesy. It was just genuine. Rooneys like thatshe wont play the sentimental card, or the obvious card. Shell always want to go at it from an angle thats intriguing and more like real life.

Garth is 100% right here. And that's one of the main reasons why we love her. Sadlyshe probably won't win Oscar for a long time because of this. But it doesn't matter.

Seriously, I can't believe that some people still insist on this crap. What is she supposed to do ? To act like Jennifer Lawrence in public all the time ? Or to smile when nothing is funny ? Give me a break.

The media put her unfair labels, and most journalist are lazy, so they just copy and paste whatever nonsense somebody else has already published. I've always thought she's very genuine. And I've always found how fake most actors look in interviews and red carpets, trying so hard to like people and posing all the time.
I hope right now some of the lazy journalist will copy and paste these Garth nice comments about Rooney.

Exactly. Rooney was always a breath of fresh air compared to 90% of other celebrities. But some people in the media see this as her personal fault ? Ridiculous.

Nahthe are too busy with the Kardashians and Jenners.

I dont get how crazy people get about the Kardashians, they are only scandal makers, and what was all the fuss about the holding your wine with your butt? Im really mad, how come they have their own show and Una and TSS dont get a deal.
Re: Mary Magdalene
Very good interview with the producers of Lion and MM http://www.sbs.com.au/movies/article/2017/01/10/see-saw-producers-help-make-lion-roar
I love this quote:
I love this quote:
In Lion, Rooney Mara has a smaller role as Saroos girlfriend (actually an amalgamation of several women) and now she is the sta1c84r in Mary Magdalene. How did that happen?
IC: It was because of her relationship with Garth and because shes an extraordinary actress. Garth talks about how without even saying anything shes saying everything. I think the Mary Magdalene role is such a powerful central performance. Its going to be extraordinary and very exciting.

I'm so ready
Re: Mary Magdalene
Thanks Sethan, great read.
Personally hoping that this turns out to be Rooney's best role yet.

Re: Mary Magdalene
Thank you Sethan! Cant wait to see this I really like Garths low profile, sans ego.
She puts herself the bar so high each ti5b4me, shes one of those rare actors that constantly evolute and surprise you with each performance. And critics say shes amazing in Una too.

Re: Mary Magdalene
Oscar contender, possibly? Maybe this will be the year of Rooney at the Oscar/Globes/etc
Re: Mary Magdalene
I don't know, She gave the best performance ever for Carol and got nothing, so I guess Oscars, Globes etc don't measure real talent.
Re: Mary Magdalene
Maybe.I guess it depends on how `controversial` the finished product is.
Re: Mary Magdalene
L Q, Agreed!
G. Davis said in an interview that he wasn't afraid of the topic.
But to your point this is a risky topic, but one that begs to be told.
Critics may or may not rule here, the Roman Catholic leaders are discussing the roles of women in their faith.
Depends a lot on how that church, and how other Christians accept the movie.
I say bring it on, based on what Davis did with Lion.

Re: Mary Magdalene
So excited for this movie. I trust Garth, he seems like a very empathetic and caring person and director. Which will only help bring out the best in our Roons
Re: Mary Magdalene
Garth was nominated for DGA ? And Lion for PGA ? So glad !
BP nomination seems very real now. Dev and Nicole are probably in. Do you think Garth can make it ?

Re: Mary Magdalene
I don't know about Box Office. But Lion did so damn well with the Guilds. Garth getting a DGA was quite a big surprise to me. Hopefully he surprises nomination day too *Prayer Circle*
I think so. I don't want to get my hopes up. But there's a go5b4od chance it can happen.

Re: Mary Magdalene
Definitely! I suspect they will frequently collaborate?
Re: Mary Magdalene
They seems to enjoy working together, so yea I can definitely see that happening
Re: Mary Magdalene
Garth Davis talking about Mary Magdalene, who's not a prostitute, and why Mr Joaquin Phoenix as Jesus http://www.patheos.com/blogs/filmchat/2016/12/mary-magdalene-director-garth-davis-says-rooney-maras-version-character-will-not-prostitute.html

Re: Mary Magdalene
were not telling the story of Mary as a prostitute, because that was an invention. So were basically just telling Marys story as it should have been told, and thats what were doing.
Thank you Garth
I couldnt think of anyone else who could play Jesus, really. There was no one else on the planet, for me. I just got Joaquin in my mind and couldnt get it out, and I just trusted that he was the right person.
He's going to be great.
The script was developed by See Saw as well, and they had a lot of experts in the field to assess the script as it went along, so theyve had all their advice from people as well, so its been carefully managed in that way.
Good to know. The more careful they are with a material like this the better.
Re: Mary Magdalene
I had no idea about his background, it really spoke to me. This is the second or third time I heard from Garth that Rooney is a one take actress I remember the interviewer from last time he interviewed Rooney during the Carol promo, those rare dudes who actually do research before the interview
Re: Mary Magdalene
those rare dudes who actually do research before the2000 interview
I agree. This collider guy (Steven Weintraub I think his name is) joins Joe McGovern and maybe David Poland, as interviewers who are able to keep it light and casual and bring out the best in Roons. It also helps that they all seem genuinely interested. Josh Horowtiz, who is similar at keeping things light and cool, should and must interview Rooney one these days. He's really sweet .
Talking about research, The interview that could've gone better was the Anne Thompson one last year. You could see that she didn't do her homework, and Rooney had to keep correcting her about her projects, and it also didn't help that her camera ran out of batteries and we didn't get to see the entire interview, lol. She usually isn't so bad, I wonder what happened that day. Probably just bad luck.
Re: Mary Magdalene
I think this dude is David Poland, I love his voice. I miss Joe McGovern! hope theyll get him for the Magdalene Q&A.
lol I remember that interview from Anne Thompson, how it got cut in the most interesting part! She said she loved ATBS, so i was expecting her to upload something from Sundanceshe only post a pic of the Q&A of GS do you think this time she deleted the whole video? lol

Re: Mary Magdalene
Yes! David Poland gives fantastic interviews, he always asks about the making of the film and upcoming projects rather than personal details.
Re: Mary Magdalene

I don't think Poland does the collider interviews. He has got his own thing going on. In the description of Garth's interview the author of the article on Collider Steve Weintraub talks about sitting down to interview Garth. I think this another guy, and they all sound similar
With Lion now playing in limited release, I recently sat down with director Garth Davis for an extended video interview. During our wide-ranging conversation he talked about making his feature debut (he previously helmed the miniseries Top of the Lake), the challenge of casting a child actor, balancing fact and fiction, how he collaborates with his cinematographer, what he learned from test screenings, filming in India, and more. In addition, he also talked abb68out his next movie, Mary Magdalene, and getting Joaquin Phoenix to play Jesus.

Re: Mary Magdalene
So they all use the same voice filter/app? anyway, it's a nice voice, I remember MacOs use to have a list of voice filters, some of them really annoying, the band Radiohead used one of them to make a song I don't remember the name of the song though.
