Blu-ray Disc Releases : How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

I need to see the destruction of Crimson Jihad in 1080p

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

Same with The Abyss... apparently James Cameron is in charge of giving final approval to any BD releases of these and he clearly enjoys tormenting us 😭

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

Yep. I bet he wants to make adjustments to things he's no longer happy with and doesn't want to pay for it himself and holdin out for Fox to write him a cheque.

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

I doubt that, he isn't George Lucas. The only things he's likely to be fussing about is the color-timing and transfer quality, I doubt he's going to mess with the actual films.

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

Well The Abyss already has two versions. There's nothing to say he wouldn't want to re-edit it again for blu-ray.

And the word is that Cameron's uneasy with the reception that his knockabout jihadis might receive in the current climate.

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

I'm pretty sure he's happy with the extended cut of The Abyss. Of all his other films on Blu Ray thus far, the only alterations are grain reduction in Aliens and changes to some stars in one shot in Titanic.

Shame if he really is stopping True Lies being reissued because of that crap.. it's not like Four Lions had any problems so I don't see how True Lies is really any different.

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

So why do you think they aren't released? Just for badness?

I don't think True Lies is comparable to Four Lions. And Jim Cameron is certainly not the same as Chris Morris. Four Lions is a satire on homegrown jihadis in the current climate. True Lies is a slick exploitation film.

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

I honestly have no idea why they weren't released years ago. There's been no actual statements made, just speculation and assumptions that get spread around the internet. Apparently retrospective documentaries were even being made for True Lies. It just seems bizarre because both titles would be big sellers, they're basically the two most obvious major back catalog films that are unavailable on Blu.

True Lies is not an exploitation film. Don't be ridiculous. It's more comparable to something like Red Dawn or Russkies, a product of the time and an artefact of when the world was simultaneously a more closed-off place and a more open and free one, for differing reasons. It's hardly offensive unless you're a hyper-sensitive SJW or a fanatical Muslim.

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

a product of the time

That's one of the better definitions of an exploitation film. It exploited pulic perception of terrorism and put it in an entertainment film without any true concern for the subject. I didn't say that it is or was intended to be offensive. However the film-maker may feel in hindsight that a less than sophisticated depcition of a terrorist threat, with nuclear weapons and all, could be regarded as dated at best. That would be enough for someone like Cameron to excuse its availability on blu ray.

This film is not comparable with either Red Dawn or Russkies. More like Spies Like Us.

Re: How the hell has "True Lies" not been released on blu-ray yet?

Yeah it's too ridiculous and OTT to be taken seriously. Pretty much every Schwarzeneggar film has played into some sort of public phobia, especially from the Republican perspective: fear of cloning, aliens, rogue South American dictators, Russians, railguns artificial intelligence and nuclear war.. if anything Collateral Damage is a more contentious title than True Lies, and that's been out on BD for years.

Basically every Cameron film is dated politically... The Abyss and both Terminators were mired in Cold War fears and Aliens was basically a Vietnam allegory. I suspect technical reasons are to blame for the holdup, rather than quibbles over political irrelevance.

Re: How the hell has 'True Lies' not been released on blu-ray yet?

I agree, and heard somewhere that two studios own the rights to True Lies, Fox and Columbia, and neither one can agree on how to split the money from blu-ray sales, so True Lies remains in rights wrangling limbo.
